Hi,

is it allowed to bring your own bottle in restaurants in Zürich ?

everywhere ? no ? some places accept it ? Is there a fee ?

In London a few alternative restaurants without a drinks license do or used to exist.

When you rent the place for the night with your company (for example in a Hotel a ballroom) , you can bring the companys stuff,( but you have to pay "Zapfengeld" to open your own booze )additional to the rent of the ballroom.

i know its popular in some countries but ive never done it here. although I know a colleague who does it in Zurich. I just dont know where but I he's probably a regular customer (I went with him to really nice restaurants and all the staff knew him :D). Of course you dont do that with wine from coop.

You must be American. In some southern states, this is legal. It's called "brown bagging". At (very few) local restaurants that don't have a liquor license (for whatever reason) they allow the patrons to bring in their own drinks and charge a "corking fee". This is a VERY localized thing, usually found only in small towns out in the country.

To my knowledge, this would NEVER be found in Switzerland.

Conversely, and humourously, brown bagging is also allowed in America at some very, very exclusive private clubs that don't offer the exact, somewhat esoteric brand that a certain patron desires. They, too, will also charge a corking fee but it will be much, much more than that barbecue joint down in Alabama.:)

I know a place in CT that does, due to it being in a dry town.

But here, I've never heard of it, probably because one doesn't need a liquor license here, and there is no such thing as a dry town.

Not uncommon in Bengali- and Pakistani-owned restaurants in Britain.

Never seen it in Switzerland.

As well as the places already mentioned, this is quite common in New Jersey, where, apparently, it's quite risky for a restaurateur to have a drinks licence as they can then be held responsible for their patrons' drink driving. So I was told by locals anyway.

But whatever the reason, it's normal, and there are "liquor stores" quite close to many restaurants catering for this need. Frankly I find it a right PITA - how the hell do I know what sort of wine to buy (or indeed how much) when I haven't even ordered my food yet? And what about an apertif and/or a digestif? And maybe I'll just stick to beers, but I don't want to make that decision an hour in advance...

Edit: Mostly, in NJ, the restaurants will provide glasses, coolers, ice or whatever at no extra charge.

Very popular in Oz where restaurants often actually have an 'offy' next door and 'BYO' on the sign outside...

No very common, but not completly unusal.

Just pay the the corackage fee / Zapfengeld which is in the region of CHF 15 - 30.

To avoid any nasty surprises ask at time of reservation if it is o.k. to bring your own bottles.

The NZZ article mentione that BYOB is better done in a restaurant where you are a regular.
Additionally, bring something really nice. Chateau de Migraine is a no go.

You can definitely pull it off. A few years back we went for a curry night in Vulkan on Klingenstrasse (connoiseurs pronounce it Klingonstrasse) and we strolled in with a grid of beer, several bottles of wine and a bottle of fine gin. We did get agreement from the staff beforehand, but I still thought we were pretty bold with the stuff.

Sory for the late response, but given the mostly very ignorant and arrogant reponses I thought I have to answer:

YES, there are a very few ones in Zurich, but not normal restaurants - You should not expect this as expected and welcomed requests in normal restaurants - every (working) Swiss guest would be very ashamed to ask for such a service - nowadays. A rather antiquated business of poorer and gone periods almost unseen these days - so far.

However, there are still a few clubs with "Zapfengebühr". The main advantage is exactely that you do not have to pay the outrages prices for alcoholics you are otherwised used to in clubs. Therefore, these clubs, which accepts Zapfengebühr business, are almost exclusively visited by very young folks!

But, yes, they exist and are legal - even, or also in Zurich, of course. And there is nothing to say against them!

And imagine :msnsarcastic:, Swiss (and foreign) students do normaly not have that much money at deposit, they way you are used to probably, and they like to have a party from time to time as well - independent of how arrogant and ignorant you like to pretend to be.

And the majority of Swiss workers do probably earn (much) less than most (ignorant and arrogant) expats in Switzerland. That isn't, however, the point. In this community you abide by this community's rules, which means that you do not discrimate against those of our members who might be fluent speakers of French or Italian but who don't understand German.

Just to add a comment about the other side of the BYOB coin (when the restaurant doesn't have an alcohol license):

In U.S., this is not out of place at some of the more high-end restaurants in San Francisco and New York (for example), where a customer might want to bring their favorite from their own personal wine cellar. As mentioned by other posters, a corkage fee is charged. I've been to dinner on several occasions, in both places, where I've seen this.

Very common in Australia. They charge you a small caulk removal charge and you can actually get insulated, bottle-shaped carriers to keep your white wine chilled on the way to the restaurant.
