That was my understanding, too. Meat roasted on a revolving spit.

Kebab is as official as official anything can be. Shawarma Kebab simply is Arabic for Döner Kebab. You also can find the Shawarma Kebab in the Palme de Beirut on Bertastrasse
Thank you! Mystery solved! I must admit that i never scrutinized the words Doner vs Shawarma. Now that I think of the taste similarities between the various versions...my gut says all of these foods must be originally derived from the greeks.

Hmmmm...time for a taste challenge.

i dislike all-in-one places: pizza, pommes, chicken wings, burgers, asian food, kebap... bäh! and the whole place looks somewhat greasy to me. no go.

The taste and fat content of the meat is a big factor... at Sesam Falaffel that I linked to earlier where the meat is CH-sourced, the meat is 'lighter' and more flavoursome, and just feel much less fatty than in inferior kebab houses where the meat probably travels from countries afar and isn't great quality (relatively speaking) to start with. Also the texture of the durum wrap or tachenbrot it's in... you can really tell the difference with the fresher stuff that is baked daily. Finally the vegetables have to be fresh, and a place with a high turnover ensures that this is so.
What about all this sauce out of the plastic bottle stuff? Does nobody use fresh sauces?

The Greeks simply took over the Arab-Turkish cuisine and mixed it with things from the Balkans

This is right of course. But true of course also is that many Turks simply use the word "Döner" to describe it

Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

will try some of the places you mentioned

But so far(last 4 years) every single Döner place in Zürich dissapointed me and my friends (french, turkish, german, british). Even when we are drunk and hungry...

I was prepared to pay an arm and a leg, but I expected some tasty food as well.

Prices for a Doner here (9chf or so) are actually pretty much the same as the UK... and the quality is miles better in CH.

In a Turkish place, you at the start and at the end should order some RAKI and in Arab places order ARAK, which is the same (RAKI in Arabic simply means MY ARAK ! ) Near the main desk you usually find a large "container" with really tasty spices

You have a Turk in your group ? Amazing. When those Turkish restaurant people see someone who they think must be a fellow Turk, they start a special effort. And cannot be stopped even when you say that you do not speak Turkish, as there are millions of Turks in Western Europe who do not speak Turkish.

Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

I love the Döners and their quality of meat here in Switzerland, but I hate it if they're not packing them with enough meat, and instead point to the "XXL Döner"-offer if you ask for more meat in yours. Quite often pricing almost double the amount for the x-tra!

You wanna know my personal favourite? - It's the 10Sfr.- Coop Döner at the Letzipark Shopping Mall!

Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

I agree with EGE, part of the Turkish Supermarket on Josefstrasse.

Le Cedre the Lebanese at Bellevue has a take away section now around the side of the restaurant. Good shawarma & falafel.

Not the best doner kebab's I've had but the top of the list for Zurich.

whenever I somewhere ask for a Döner-Kebab / Shawarma-Kebab, the meat comes directly from the skewer, quite to the contrary the chaps even make a kind of show out of it. More of a problem in many Turkish places here is that they use chicken instead of lamb. I therefore always ask about what meat they use. I repeatedly refused the chicken-Döner and opted for a straight Lamb-Kebab. Amazing btw. is to see that many Turkish "gastronomes" are far better with Italian cuisine than with Turkish cuisine . Reveals that their parents swiftly realized that Italian Pasta is cheaper than Turkish meat And so they grew up with Italian cuisine in reality.
