Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

If someone happens to visit Istanbul, the best doner I ever had was in:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...-Istanbul.html

The meat is simply amazing.

It is not exactly at the easiest place to reach via public transportation but is close to the second bridge or to the Kanlica port (a couple of liras by taxi from there).

Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

My husband loves the one they have at Spuntino - right next to train station in Tiefenbrunnen...

Which part of Zürich would Istanbul be in?

Reviving the thread as I found this article about the best Döner kebab in Zürich: https://www.gaultmillau.ch/zuri-isst...7q89ZB3ZBIrtXE

Demet in Wollishofen indeed has fantastic döner.

The photos in the article are brilliant as they illustrate the issue. The first candidate serves Döner made out of "Kalb-Rind-Poulet-Mix"... who seriously puts veal, beef and chicken on the same stick to grill???

The article talks about "seasonal raclette kebaps" as well as added gherkins - the ultimate Swiss condiment. It does not discuss the elephant in the room: Most Döner sold in Zurich would be outright illegal in Germany. If you slap cheap minced meat on a stick is that not Döner Kebap. In Germany the shop would be fined if they tried to sell it as such and would need to lable it as "minced meat prepared in a Döner Kebap style". It will obviously never taste nearly as well as the original. Yes, some shops have Döner that looks as if its made out of slabs of meat but most of them hide 50% mince in between those meat pieces... I havent fount any decent one in Zurich. Steinegrill in Basel does decent Döner. I guess the price of meat in Switzerland makes it hard to offer really decent Döner for the sort of price level the typical customer would accept.

There's a long street/area in Oerlikon or Seebach (I miss its name now) which is called "Little Istanbul", don't know if they have the best kebab though.

Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

For a decent kebab with real meat (not the long strands of what could best be described as sausage) at the same price you pay for the indecent ones, I would recommend Sultan in Neuaffoltern. It's just across the street from Ayverdis, which is also good but more expensive.

Zürich is not in Germany.
Sure, but Donee Kebab in it’s current form is German. The Turkish immigrants in the late 60s adapted traditional bbqs into a takeaway street snack as this fit into the culture of Berlin where people went to snack bars to buy a bratwurst in a bread roll before. It only arrived in Zurich in the 90s, at a time where it already was the number one fast food in Germany. Like it or not, but the reference for the street food version of doner kebab is Berlin, not Istanbul.

Will I horrify any of you if I told you I like the kebabs they sell now in Migros Takeaways?

I still miss a good Shawarma tbh. Back home it almost became a national dish.

True, but you could then say:

Zürich is not Dehli
Zürich is not Paris
Zürich is not Tokyo
Zürich is not Beijing
Zürich is not Karachi
Zürich is not Penang
Zürich is not Tuscany

and so on.

I think Treverus makes a valid point. Not sure what your counter argument is.

Are you saying that food can only be good in it's country of origin and elsewhere it's badness can be excused?

Never eaten there but the review that Treverus linked to gave the Wiedikon branch a very poor review (translated):

Quote:
In the "Ayverdi's" branch in Zurich Wiedikon, five minced meat kebab simultaneously rotate. All consist of a veal-beef-chicken-mix and the standard kebab is available exclusively in flatbread. The wrapped portion of meat: Generous, rather dry and made of irritatingly small flesh that strangely chewed. The seasonal raclette kebab, which did not struggle with these problems thanks to melted cheese, liked much better. A yoghurt sauce with gherkins and onions also provided pleasant acidity. The "gourmet" variety with truffle sauce, which gave the kebab a one-dimensional, penetrating aroma like truffle oil, turned out to be inedible.

The cult status and the more than 12'000 Instagram fans are due to the clever marketing of "Ayverdi's" rather than the qualities of the doner kebab.

Yes but Danieldreier was recommending the place over the road. Ayverdis was used as geographical reference point.

I think you are thinking of Friesstrasse which isn't really Little Istanbul, but more Balkanstrasse - it has lots of ex-Yugoslav countries' restaurants, hairdressers and Shisha bars - fun place to go out!

I don't eat meat kebabs and haven't since an encounter at new point, documented earlier in the thread, but Ayverdi's falafel boxes with cheese and egg are AMAZING.

Re: Best Doner Kebab in Zürich?

The little kebab place at Horgen Bahnhof serves up reasonable kebabs. (Just to the left of the main station entrance.) Natürlich, I've only ever consumed them when quite drunk, so this opinion may not be worth much.

The one at the next Bahnhof, is bloody awful.

It was quite funny that when being served, the owner heard my accent, and that I wasn't local, took away the cocktail sauce and bought some hot chili sauce instead!

My point was that German regulations are not relevant here as this is a different country.
