Re: Where to buy fish roe?

Another thicko here who is adament that roe is fish eggs.

Fish sperm would be yucky, not like little pearls that pop in your mouth. Unless fish have extremely big sperm.

Re: Where to buy fish roe?

Definition of roe from Britannica Online:

roe, either the mass of eggs of a female fish (hard roe) or the mass of sperm, or milt, of a male fish (soft roe), considered as food. The most prized of hard roes is that of the sturgeon, from which caviar is made.

Either one, leave the poor fish alone.

Bottaga di muggine would be the specialty from Sardinia, whereas down in Sicily it's mostly tuna...
Been many times to Sardegna, never to Sicily.

The bottarga in my fridge, which we will have tonight, is muggine.

It's smoked cods' roe in taramasalata too.
The roe I really love is hard cods' roe, but I haven't found it in Switzerland. It's wonderful fried on toast.
It's one of the few reasons I ever go to Harrods when I'm in London, as they always have it in their fresh fish shop. It's reallycheap too.
If anyone knows where it can be found here in Lausanne, I'd be really grateful, but I don't think there's anywhere.

Ahhh ...you're making me hungry, man!
And I have to wait all day long until I get something good enough to quell my gluttonous condition
Think I'll follow @st2lemans and go for a nice plate of "spaghetti alla chitarra" (= square section spaghetti) with "bottarga", garlic & chili.
Damn.
Still 9 hours to go

Paul

You have to be kidding, mate!
Of course I had my breakfast... Can't start the day without!
And just to be on topic - I would have no qualms or problems in eating fish roe (hmmm salmon?) on toast & butter

Korean fish roe?

I'm looking for pollock roe popular in Korean cuisine (where it's called myeongnan) -- salted, amazing in a stew called Al Tang / Al Chigae. It's also known as "tarako" in Japanese food, "ikra mintaya" in Russian food. Anyone seen this anywhere in Zürich? Yumi Hana doesn't have it (nor do I spot the stew on Korean restaurant menus here).

There's a Greek deli near Hottingerplatz in Zurich which sells bags of it. When I get to a proper computer I'll get more details for you.
"Guest" never followed up. Would someone else kindly point me to this place? Not for Korean cooking but I'd be very interested in it for taramasalata.

Probably Oliven & Öl, they've been around since forever.

Unfortunately they don't have it (just asked), but it's great to know about Oliven & Öl.

Re: Where to buy fish roe?

For anyone interested who later happens across this thread: I eventually found mentaiko (the chile-marinated version of tarako) at both Nishi on Falkenstr. and at Yumi Hana.
