Re: Where to buy fish roe?

Hm.
Dried?
Fresh / preserved?

I'm a big fan of both - but I follow the mediterranean diet and down here I have no problms finding either "bottarga" (dried tunafish roe) or brine preserved roe (usually lumpfish and salmon).

You can get fresh Sturgeon caviar at the tropical house in Frutigen (Near Interlaken)

How much would you be willing to pay for it? And does it have to come from a fish?

Joking. How much were you looking to get, and from what species of fish were you looking for? Salmon?

Actually, normal (and better) bottarga is mullet.

Love it.

But he/she asked for Roe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_roe
Roe or hard roe is the fully ripe internal egg masses in the ovaries, or the released external egg masses of fish and certain marine animals, such as shrimp, scallop and sea urchins. As a seafood, roe is used both as a cooked ingredient in many dishes and as a raw ingredient. The roe of marine animals, such as the roe of lumpsucker, hake and salmon, is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.[1]
The term soft roe or white roe denotes fish milt. Roe from a sturgeon or sometimes other fishes is the raw base product from which caviar is made.

As far as I know, the OP has NOT said which fish he is seeking. It might even be herring or salmon.

Re: Where to buy fish roe?

Why not accept that roe are technically eggs from a female fish.

If you want to call fish testes and sperm roe then that's OK, but not with me.

http://www.oona-caviar.ch/?lang=en caviar, made from sturgeon eggs, in Frutigen, Switzerland.

Re: Where to buy fish roe?

Even a thicko like me knows that roe is fish eggs.

There's a Greek deli near Hottingerplatz in Zurich which sells bags of it. When I get to a proper computer I'll get more details for you.

Because Roe is not Caviar. If it is was, they wouldn't have two different names for it. Roe is sperm. It is both. Snore button please.

Hehe Tom... my mediterranean friends are going to get their knickers all bunched up when they'll read your post...
Bottaga di muggine would be the specialty from Sardinia, whereas down in Sicily it's mostly tuna... I think the latter would be easier to find in a ZH deli (IMHO, YMMV, etc).

Still - give me a nice plate of spaghetti alla bottarga and you'll make me a happy man every time!

Ciao

Paul

Caviar comes from the virgin sturgeon.
The virgin sturgeon's a very. fine fish.
The virgin sturgeon needs no urgin'
That's why caviar's a very fine dish

Roe is fish eggs; caviar is fish eggs ..... it's just a case of whether Sir John has made the water milky.

Anyway, the Caspian Sea is almost non existent, now.
