A compliment to Cafe Felix

Since there are so many threads bashing Swiss restaurants and gastronomy, I only felt it just, to mention a place here when it is over the top in the right way.

This evening I had a coffee with two friends at Café Felix near the Bellevueplatz. I was watching my friends infant baby for the first time on my own. We had some coffees, and I was to stay on and wait while she left for a couple of hours, writing menus, drinking copious amounts of caffeine, like people do(except with a baby) until she came back. Which was supposed to be around 8pm.

I had never been there before, so I had no idea they actually closed at 7pm. The friend I was watching the baby for, her husband was supposed to come by to pick up the both of them, from there as well from 7:30 to 8pm, so being there was important. When 6:58 rolled around, they asked me to pay my bill, which since I was in the middle of burping and putting the boy back to sleep I told him no. Now, I wasn't trying to be rude. But that time between the bottle and the snooze button is fekkin important to the solitude of everyone's well being. AND, I thought they were open for another few hours.

So the waiter waited until I could fork the money, without disturbing the boy. Then while I was rocking him about 30 minutes later, I asked if they were closing soon, as there were not that many people inside. Turns out they already closed, but told me I could stay as long as I needed until the woman I was watching the baby for(they thought my wife) would return, as they did not want me to stay outside with the baby in the cold, and they were still cleaning up.

I eventually stayed almost an hour after closing, being the last customer in there. If I was by myself, and having a coffee I would have never have stayed that long. Never. They were so kind, even to the last minute. And it was the owner there too. Great customer service for 3 people that only had 3 coffees and a schoggi Schlgrahm.

I've heard this also works with puppies.

But I'm so glad to hear about your experience at Cafe Felix, Confloozed. I'll have to check it out.

It isn't the cheapest place in town for a coffee by the way. But it is the location that drives the price up. As per the Man with the Baby effect...when my own boys were that age my mind was a million miles away from noticing if anyone else noticed me in that way, and also, I had the pregnancy "sympathy" fat as well. But I strangely agree, there were women I thought noticing me more then normal. Even with a little dog trying to dry hump my leg each time I was in stress with the baby, that we also had along with us.

What a visual! So you were attracting more than just women!

But as far as the cost of a coffee goes, I am willing to calculate into the price the atmosphere and location. I really enjoy a place with character, whether it's beautiful architecture or situated in a place where you can sit and watch the world go by. I don't have the chance to lounge around in town all that often so I don't mind paying a bit more if the cafe adds to the experience. And it also means I feel free to linger as long as I like and even read the paper or a book for a couple of hours. Such a luxury and all for a few CHF more than you'd pay for a quick coffee somewhere in a rush.

I'll add another good local experience...my wife and I went to Cafe des Amis in Wipkingen and loved it. I had a delicious soup and the waitress was very friendly and helpful. I also liked the "vibe" there.
