You can't eat cheaply in Switzerland

.......................or can you?

1 block of smoked bacon - 6chf
1 large bag of veg - 6chf (COOP special)
A couple of bay leaves
A bit of rosemary
Pepper and salt

Chop all the veg, put in a large pan. Saute for 10mins. Add 2l of water. Cook for an hour.

Divide into 4

Take 1 of the 4 (put the other 3 in the freezer), add 100g of Pearl barley, another 300-500ml of water.
Cook until barley is soft.

Result is 4 portions of soup <1chf per portion!

Re: You can't eat cheaply in Switzerland

Add a good handful of lentils and cut cost again by good chunk.

('lard' in French is bacon .... not lard)

6 CHF? You're having a laugh mate. I saw one on Autoscout for only 5 CHF.

Apples and pears, apples and pears. I saw that one. It was lard. Not bacon.

Re: You can't eat cheaply in Switzerland

You may have seen it advertised on Autoscout for 5CHF, but it hadn't SOLD had it? I happen to know it had been sitting on there for at least 3 years.

Tell you what, I'll offer you 1.75CHF for it. Count yourself lucky, a bacon dealer will offer you 1.50CHF.

We add borlotti beans (soaked and cooked first).

Also, stir in a few young spinach leaves just before serving.

For vegetarians, omit the bacon (like Dodgy Ken did) and chuck a few parmesan rinds in the soup while it cooks for great flavour.

Er, hardly.

Get friendly with a few expats. They serve gruel for dinners with friends.

Are you actually suggesting that anyone earning less than 120 000CHF/year can actually survive in Switzerland??

Nonsense!

I ate some vegetables once; they turned out to be EF forum members. Stringy but filling.
