Favorite Switzerland grocery store foods

Hi EF,

I don't know when I could leave Switzerland - could be next year, might be never. But while I am here I want to make constant small efforts to appreciate the country. I have found grocery stores to be great gateways to culture in every country I visit. I am currently working my way through all the cantonal sauccisons available at my local (huge) Migros, and loving every bite! What are your favorite items in the grocery stores that can only be found in Switzerland, or on a limited scale out of the country? This doesn't have to be Migros specific. It can be any item you fancy in any grocery store, kiosk, fraumarkt, etc...

Re: Favorite Switzerland grocery store foods

The fun thing about Migros is that it consits of ten individual cooperatives. Each cooperative serves a specific area. If you shop in a Migros from an other area you will find food products not available in your region.

For Zurich people it is easy to get to Spreitenbach to get Bernese spcialities.

For speciality: Have you tried Ziger? It is a cheese made from whey spiced with special kind of herb.

Try these cookies Holly:

They're the Migros version of Dutch 'stroopwafels' and really good. You might end up eating the whole package at once however..
I warned you!

Zurich Items:
Hüppen or Tirggel. As Zurich as the Läckerli are Basel.

Other "Swiss" items:
Kohlrabi, Dried Green Beans (goes very well with Saucisson), Kutteln (Tripes) in Tomato Sauce (served with Caraway seeds), Blut und Leberwurst (Blood and liver sausage, many cultures have a variety of these). If you have a farmers market which sells very fresh trouts (Bachforelle, Seeforelle or Regebogenforelle (My most preferd first)) you can cook them "Blau", which means simmering for 10 min in slightly salted water, with a bit of vinegar and herbs. Important, do not clean the fish thoroughly only rinse with cold water. Otherwise the fish will not get the distinc blue color.

Dried Green Beans (goes very well with Saucisson),

I've seen these bohnen and wondered how they were prepared. How do you cook them with the sauccison? I will try all your recommendations! Thank you!

The package instructions say to soak the beans overnight before cooking -- I ignore that silliness and cook them straight. Give them a quick rinse, then put them in a pot and half the height of water of the beans. Add some finely diced onion, some ground black pepper, then put peeled, sliced saucisson (or any other smoked meat or combination thereof, such as wieners, slab bacon, or ham, in 1cm thick slices) on top. Bring to a slight boil, cover and then reduce to a simmer. After 15 mins or so, remove the meat and turn the beans around so they get cooked evenly. Cook for another 15 mins or until the meat and beans are cooked. Season to taste.

I love the Migros brand Biberli w Mandelfullung. They are even better if they have sat around for a few months!

We really enjoy Sanddorn Jam and Coop has a Sanddorn syrup. Migros 'gourmet' Orange Flower syrup is really nice too.

Chirat has a new line of seasoned cornichons (6) - of note is a cayenne pepper one & sweet & sour. Both are delicious

Others include:

Garlic
Carmelized Onions
Chili
Sundried tomatoes

Hello everyone,

I was looking for Marmite and a friend told me about a Swiss spread called Cenovis.

So clearly my go-to Swiss products now for my butter toasts

That explains so much. We recently moved to Bern & I am amazed at how much better the Migros is here...in quality and selection.

Lidl is becoming more and more popular. Ten years ago, many Swiss swore they wouldn't shop there and now they go there weekly.

Kefir it is these days, Bio Migros.

I am just used getting it in large bottles, haven't seen the milky kefir in big bottles here, or cheaper really, elsewhere.

Migros is still my preferred store, although I have to say that Lidl and Aldi have improved their offer a lot in the past few years. I'm often pleasantly surprised.
