Where to find Swiss marmite - cenovis?

I love marmite, but recently read that there is also a Swiss version called cenovis that originates very locally in Rheinfelden, perhaps not surprising as being a by product of beer production. Does anyone can suggest where it can be purchased? is it very similar to marmite??

There seems to be also a german version called vitam-r. I'd be happy to sample it too, if only i can locate it.. preferably not far from Basel

Re: Where to find Swiss marmite - cenovis?

I find it too sweet, and too runny. If you have squeezy marmite it's that sort of texture.
I bought it in co-op.

Re: Where to find Swiss marmite - cenovis?

What the OP wants is a bread spread, not a liquid, and abi_bouw even complained about the Cenovis paste being too runny.

Actually, Swiss Cenovis changed its consistency many times in the 8 decades of its existence. Sometimes it was so thick that it was difficult to even get it out of the tube, and the tubes were very prone to leak around the corners of the crimp seal, which was utterly annoying. The current version is in the middle of the consistency range I've experienced in about 60 years.

Re: Where to find Swiss marmite - cenovis? German vitam-r

thanks, found it and eating every day since then. Not quite the same as Marmite, but ok in its absence!

what about German vitam-r? Can anyone seen it in shops (which ones)?

Apparently: VITAM-R distinguishes itself by a very mild, delicious taste from other yeast extracts.

I do not know about Vitam-R but Marmite is availbale at Coop (but still appreciate that you buy local ):

If you like yeast you may also try the green Le Parfait.

Re: Where to find Swiss marmite - cenovis?

The Swiss Marmite is similar to the Swiss Cenovis and you can easily find't in practically all supermarkets in the French part of Switzerland but also in some other parts in Switzerland.
This because Cenovis is mostly used in the Canton de Vaud.
By the way, all these yeast extracts are very similar and depending of the country, you would find different brands as for example:
In England: Marmite
In Germany: Vitam-R
In Brazil: Cenovit
In Australia: Vegemite
Probably from all of them the less bitter is Cenovit from Brazil.
Have a great use with all of them and don't forget that beside using it on the bread with butter, you can use it in many recipes to create UMAMI.

Re: Where to find Swiss marmite - cenovis?

Patrick Jean, welcome to the EF and thanks for your global summary.

Looks like I'll have to go to Brazil to test that variety, the only one I haven't tried yet. My American wife thinks I'm being weird when I spread Swiss Cenovis or (in the USA) English Marmite on my buttered bread. But when I add a tad of it in certain meals, such as soups, sauces or BBQs, she wonders where that special taste comes from, and she likes it. Haven't told her yet...

By the way, you might want to introduce yourself in the Introductions section, which you'll find on the Forum page. It needn't be your whole bio, just a few words about yourself and why you are here now. That's much appreciated.

Thanks for joining us.

That sound like something I want to try out.

I can't stand marmite (or cenovis) on buttered bread - on the other hand I had no problems to sprinkle said buttered bread with Aromat for years, so whom I to judge people.

For years? Decades, in my case anyway. Yet another thing that makes my wife cringe. I love you, curley (well, you know that), even though you don't like Cenovis as a spread.

Where to find Vegemite?

You can find Vegemite (from Australia) in Brazil with a different name, as Cenovit.
Cenovit is the same type of yeast extract, being a dark and consistent paste.
It's the same great taste on a buttery toast but it's also a great seasoning and you can use it in many recipes to increase the UMAMI effect.
Have a try, you will love it.
