Dairy quality questions

Third night in zurich, great to be here, thanks for all the advice in the other food thread.

I would appreciate suggestions of where to buy the very very best quality

- milk
-chocolate milk
-vanilla ice cream or creMa or fiorI dI laTte
-buffalo mozzarella
-butter
-yogurt, preferably unflavored.

In Zurich. Store names and brand names greatly appreciated.

Also, having never tasted buffalo milk butter, is it very delicious?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I usually live in Cambodia. Virtually all of the milk comes from Vietnam, which is
Not known for its dairy. Canada, my other country, produces better but not quite good dairy. The family business was cheese manufacturing, but our yogurts and cheeses did not compare to even ordinary Swiss products.

Re: Dairy quality questions

Go to the Jelmoli food hall on Bahnhofstrasse for all of it. They have burrata there for 19 CHF - bring it to room temperature and eat with tomatoes and salt.

Re: Dairy quality questions

If you don't want to part with an arm and a leg in costs, I would just buy most of the staple stuff from the supermarket (Migros or Coop). The Bio fresh milk is perfectly fine, as well as the yoghurts, butter and ice-cream.

You can also get bufala mozzarella in the supermarket but if you want to fork out for the fancy-pants stuff in Jelmoli, they have it there, too.

Even the standard non bio stuff is perfectly tasty and healthy.

I agree, but for me, on a purely subjective and personal whim, I prefer the bio milk for cereal and tea. Even the "hoch past" milk, and definitely the UHT stuff tastes weird. Basically if it has too long a shelf life, for me, it's got a weird taste, and if my tea tastes weird, I'm a grumpy bugger.

The taste of "hochpasteurisierte" or UHT milk has nothing to do with bio (organic) nor with the general quality of the milk. To enhance shelf life the milk is heated to high temperatures (above 100°C) which causes the lactose to caramelize and therefore changes the taste of the milk.

A good combo of taste and shelf life is the pasteurized and micro-filtered (mikrofiltriert) milk from Coop.

So, it is fair to say you usually live with one leg in Cambodia and the other in Canada.
What a complicated world.

Or the Globus Delicatessa.

As others have said. Taste is mostly personal, and you could start a livid discussion about proper and real plain yogurt alone.

PS: Chocolate milk, better make your own with your favorite milk and chocolate powder when you really need the "the very very best quality".

Yep, sorry. I wasn't intentionally linking organic with the heat treatment process. I just find that the "bio" labelled fresh milk suits my tea-fussy tastes.

Maybe but do try the bottle of chocolate milk they do at Sprungli.

Re: Dairy quality questions

I am particularly interested in chocolate milk, plain (vanilla or creme or fior di latte or similar) ice cream and plain sour yogurt as those are my favorite foods.

I did try chocolate at a couple of cafes in Zurich that came recommended a generation ago and remember that it was excellent so I might try sprungli or perhaps a less famous suggestion? Did not remember any excellent pre packed Swiss chocolate milks (Luxlait from Luxembourg was outstanding) so still interested in any brands that anyone enjoys.

Particularly interested in which chocolate powder is very good, that could even make it back to Canada or Cambodia. Canada this time around for me is to attend my sisters wedding, Zurich is an out of the way very long stopover,
and a quick turnaround in Canada is planned to make it home for my daughters birthday.
I also hope to come to Zurich for a month a year from now. Since food costs does not seem to be a major issue ( a little planning, no restaurants), plane tickets are usually close to free for me, accomodation is the only cost concern.

Life is not all that complicated actually. Wife and children are in Cambodia, other family in Canada, as are the remnants of finances and work.

This series of questions actually does not have a budget attached to it. If I spend a couple hundred francs on a small quantity of outstanding dairy I will be pleased. I am very inclined to be frugal day to day, so this is an exceptional experience for me.

Thanks for all of the help

sure, its a mater of taste, I prefer the Milk Drink UHT for my black tea, it tastes less "cow".
