I need hemp seeds for eating and I have tried some alternative food shops in Zurich but no luck so far. I don't want to order it online as I might get into trouble with the local sheriff (for the wrong reasons). I rather buy in person from an alternative food shop. Any idea? Also where can I buy flax seeds and Kale?

You can buy flax seeds (German word is Leinsamen) at Müller Reformhaus. They are a chain. I know there's one in Zurich off the Bahnhofstrasse. Maybe they have Hemp seeds, too.

No idea about Kale. I think it's also called Kohl in German (same as cabbage, since kale is a kind of wild cabbage), but I could be mistaken. Maybe ask at Müller or another bio shop if they know where to find this.

There are about 20 Reformhäuser in the Zürich area. Some are attached to an Apotheke.

To translate your seeds, have a gander at http://dict.leo.org/ I had a quick look at "kale" but, not being an expert in this foodstuff, didn't know which was the correct German translation.

Thanks everyone! I was actually about to go to Müller Reformhaus but thought it would be wiser to start a thread first. I went to an alternative food shop recently and the lady looked at me funny when I asked for Hemp seeds

A friend of mine who lives abroad suggested hemp seeds. I searched high and low and couldn't find any - but got lots of funny looks. I finally found some in Landi (that agricultural store chain). They were packaged up as bird food so I didn't dare eat them. They looked a lot drier than the one in your photo.The birds loved them though.

rant alert- I don't want to go on a major rant but it's such bull that govts in so many coutries act like pricks when it comes to Hemp! One of the most useful plants in the world gets treated like a step child!

Migros and Coop both sell organic flax seeds. I buy mine in Migros because they are crushed and therefore don't just pass through the system without doing much good!
I have found kale for sale at markets but have never seen it in any shop/supermarket. It's easy to grow your own!

I was looking at the pumpkin seeds......cornflakes section in Migros but I did not see any flax seeds. Will look again. Grantley don't the seeds get crushed when you chew them? Unless you are a bird that likes to swallow Sorry just being childish

They're awfully small for chewing! You should find them in the same section as pumpkin seeds (leinensamen/graines de lin geschrotet/égrugées).

'Round these parts, I buy my kale at the Portuguese stores practically year round or at the farmers market. You have to go early on a Saturday morning they are gone by 11am. I've been chastised enough for showing up after 11 looking for kale... You got to get up early in the morning!

It's probably a similar answer, but where can I buy dried green peas for making soup? I've trawled through some larger Coops but have had no luck. There's plenty of lentils on sale but no peas...

ooooooooooooh, it is a simple couve you are looking for... i have seen them in Portuguese markets in Zurich as well. They seem to all over the city. Some of them are better than others. I am not a big fan of couves, but next time i go to the Portuguese store for my fix, i will ask them when they receive and at what time is best to get them.

About the hemp seeds, i used to see them across the border in Feldkirch

I've never found them in Switzerland Bubbles, friends and family have always brought them with from England. The yellow split peas make a great soup especially with Bohnenspeck, good to stave off the craving.

If you have a Claro or any other "fair trade, or other reformhaus" outlet close by, you should be able to get them okay.
I get mine from my little nearby Claro shop.
Note to Oldhand, they are still not quite the same as the Marrowfat peas required to make "Mushy Peas", basically just -split and dried- green peas- still, at a pinch!!?
The yellow split peas are of course, also really great, they being the base for that most commonly known, "Pea 'n Ham" soup.
