What about vegetables? Do you only eat them at weekends or not at all?
Depends on the vegetable By now I know roughly the net carbs of the different type of veg and i eat during the week things like lettuce, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, sometimes green peppers, etc. The key is to avoid starchy veg like potatoes, peas, corn, beans, legumes, etc.

More importantly, do we care??

A controlled diet, whether that be carbs or fat or calories or any other fad, is there because people are unable to stop themselves consuming more calories that they need.

I don't want to live forever, who the hell does, the human body isn't designed to. You will get old, bits of you will fail and you will die**.

I will die earlier than I could possible live to because I eat too much saturated fat, drink too much and consume far too much chocolate. I may not die happy, but I sure as hell am going to live happy.

**Unless you are pitching for a head transplant. (keeping it topical).

Call it midlife crisis, but after counting the empty pizza boxes and wine bottles in our recycling I have decided to change my lifestyke, especialIy my eating habits.

I know that Paleo has been around for a while, and after doing a lot of research I find that it is a diet that would suit me. After one week without alcohol, sugar and white flour products I can say that I have no craving for any of them. I would love to hear from others who do it and maybe get some yummy recipes.
My hubby wants to lose some weight and we're following these principles.
If you can ignore the word "elite" from the first page ...here, I think this stuff is better than Paleo.
http://www.teamunify.com/cast/__doc_...on%20Guide.pdf
There are quite a few recipes and ideas there... I'm having what he's having because is healthy, balanced (I feel better indeed) and even tasty.

Re: Paleo - Anyone here doing it?

Used to, I also was doing a keto diet for a while. During that time I lost a lot of weight and my skin was the clearest it's ever been (I was working out more during that time too)

There is a Swiss Paleo website I used to follow:

http://swisspaleo.ch

Also Nom Nom Paleo recipes that I still cook every so often now.

Let me know if you need any help with meal planning and etc

Meal planning is very important. In fact, I personally eat much more now than before..... when I didn't follow any diet (or programme). Only differently.

Meal planning is very important.

Tonight I plan to eat leftover lamb curry made from the leftovers from the roast leg of lamb.

I then plan to eat much chocolate leftover from easter.

Even the foods I regularly ate got a fat supercharge: I coated steak in thick coat of grass-fed butter, salads were drowned in olive oil, and my morning green tea got a big dollop of coconut oil.
I understand steaks coated in butter ...but green tea with coconut oil?
Really, how far can you go with this one and still feel healthy...

Wrong. Educate yourself before making a fool of yourself by revealing such arrogant ignorance. There's a huge difference between a calorie from, say, high glycemic carb, from lean protein of from alcohol. Even ignoring gene polymorphism, which is way too complex for you to comprehend anyway, your body will process them differently.

That's not actually true. There were a lot of assumptions in the past that have since been proved wrong and most 'real' experts seem to basically agree.
When you read the article linked by Uncle GroOve you will find that is still contradictory what experts and doctors say about healthy nutrition, not a thing from the past.

The story you linked to was not written by an expert (in the sense that I understand the word).
It was a sample of one person so hardly conclusive.
Modern methods of study control have allowed massive individual studies, and meta-studies to take place which can more easily see the results of various diets and exercise.
Advances in knowledge mean that scientists can understand the human body much better.

Re: Paleo - Anyone here doing it?

I just want to say again that I hope your new diet goes well. But I also hope that if it does or does not, you do not become all self-righteous about it and start preaching like many people on this thread are, on both sides.

Btw, for health issues anyone might be experiencing that they think are related to diet, please see a gasteroenterologist or an immunologist for advice, not a health website or other random people.

Re: Paleo - Anyone here doing it?

Hello, I do Paleo/low carb-ish most of the time.
I relax this for holidays and Easter/Christmas etc

I don't have any recipes as such, but I cobble together hot and cold meals from meat, prawns, smoked salmon, mackerel, eggs, avocado, berries, nuts, low carb green veggies (lettuce, broccoli) etc...
I allow myself a bit of cheese as a snack occasionally, and have almond milk in coffee.

My favourite thing is COYO, which you can only get in Hiltl in Zurich.
Dairy free, sugar free yogurt made from coconuts.
Creamy and naturally sweet. Heaven.

Good luck!

As I mentioned, for me it has worked fantastic, but I am not even on paleo, but rather induce ketosis by completely eliminating carbs during the week. I eat only protein and fat during the week and load with carbs during the weekend. With a very similar level of activity as before (4 times on average either gym or run) I have lost according to the scales slightly more than 10kg in 6 months, BUT its actually more as i have put on more muscle (and muscle weighs more than fat for the same volume). My body fat moved from 28-30% to 15-17% right now. I am aiming for 10% and should get there eventually.
Just to add my 2 cents to the debate:

It is important to realise that the body is not just made up for fat and muscle, but that within these two things is a rather large amount of water.

People often assume that the initial weight loss experienced on a low carbohydrate diet (and high protein) diet is due to the body switching fuels and "burning up fat stores" - this is not the case. Two things start happening when you start such a diet: firstly the body uses up it's glycogen stores (the carbohydrates stored) The liver stores approximately 100 g of glycogen and muscle has 400 g of glycogen, so that makes half a kilo in weight. Add to that the fact that with each g of glycogen lost goes approximately 2 g of water. So that makes a fairly quick weight loss of 1.5kg.....

Next you start making ketone bodies from fat (from your body stores, and from fat from the diet) - this increases sodium in your kidneys, and further increases water loss.
In fact loads of scientific studies have shown that the "extra" weight loss people experience with low carb diets compared to mixed diets (i.e., eating a balanced diet, just smaller amounts) can be completely accounted for by loss of body water. Plus glycogen stores and body water will be rapidly restored (they are important after all).

Anyway, to cut a long story short, my point is that if you are doing these sort of diets alter general feelings of "wellness" or due to allergies etc that is one thing (horses for courses and all of that), but these diets for weight loss is a whole 'nother kettle of fish.
