It's good to use aluminium or plastic trays for cakes so it can be cut into portions. If you're doing the Eton thingy, you could use plastic cups. Usually these things are outdoors + trays sit on the table a while so have a cover you can put over it (eg: clingfilm). I did Jelly once which caused a lot of amusement. Or you could do mini trifles as it's a birthday.
