Apéro dessert, what should I make?

So I have been invited to an evening birthday Apéro for a good friend and been asked to bring a dessert, I have not been to one before, any suggestions?

Eton Mess! Simple and seasonal, the Swiss always marvel at its history and then can compare it with Gruyères' famous "meringues with crème double".

It's good to use aluminium or plastic trays for cakes so it can be cut into portions. If you're doing the Eton thingy, you could use plastic cups. Usually these things are outdoors + trays sit on the table a while so have a cover you can put over it (eg: clingfilm). I did Jelly once which caused a lot of amusement. Or you could do mini trifles as it's a birthday.

Usually the swiss normally just bring tarts to these events so making something a bit different always goes down well!
Trifle is great and also chocolates trifles go down well and they seem to love them - very easy to make and they look great!

I often make a carrot cake for this kind of invitation .
With an icing of 90% cacao chocolate.
I consider myself as Aargauer anyway

Why don't you bake something based on a recipe from back home?

When I don't have enough time or energy to make something more elaborated, I just bring Marmorkuchen. For some reason it seems to be successful at any time.

The Swiss have a very limited concept of what desert is, for most there is only Ice Cream or Tiramisu.

So almost any of the classic English Puddings or American Pies are a revelation.

Indeed!

In the early days, before I knew any better, I went out on a limb... and now MIL's cinnamon peach cobbler had made it to the Geraniumpolizei list of Officially Approved Quartier Apero Desserts.

(Does that add to, or detract from, my integration points?)


Go with a dish from back home - if nothing else it will be a souce of conversation.

Make peanut brittle, any recipe you like, and when you add the baking soda, also add some powdered habanero to taste (I grow and powder my own).

It has a delayed reaction when eating.

Cookies (biscuits) or bars are easy to serve and eat at a party since they don't need a plate or fork. I like to make something in keeping with the season of the year, so maybe something like lemon lime bars? http://justalittlebite.com/lemon-lime-bars/
