I'm getting old.

Hi EFers

So, I prepared a vat of cookies yesterday, and as I was in a mood to experiment, used only half the amount of sugar and only a third of the amount of chocolate (the only sweetening agents in the cookies) stated in the recipe. Turns out that they seemed just as sweet as the full-chocolate and full-sugar version.

My sweet tooth - where is it going?

Any similar experiences, anyone?

Re: I'm getting old.

Interesting. As we get older we are supposed to taste less, therefore needing more sugar and chocolate. Maybe you just went through a detox from supersweet stuff to normal and now your taste buds understand tastes and flavors better. If you were a smoker and quit smoking, that would happen, too.

Mmmmmm, cookies.

If we'd turn this into an EF cookie-tasting event, perhaps
But if I were to send you some, surely you'd end up with just crumbs

Not that they'd taste any worse in crumb form, now I think of it...

FunnyBone,

perhaps that's true,

I haven't had sweet drinks in a very long time, and the mere thought of eating e.g. Migros cookies makes me think about how I could possibly reduce the sugar content in them by about 75% to be able to eat them...

You probably nuked your tastebuds back in the seventies with space cookies.

And what do you substitute for the sugar you dont put in? if nothing, does the consistency come out the same?

Re: I'm getting old.

I'm with you, Glowjupiter - I've lost my taste for sugar. I regularly cut all my old standard recipes - yes, even the sacred Tollhouse Cookies - in half or even by 2/3.

Around age 50 chocolate stopped tasting good, and now I can't even eat it. (Is that an integration fail? )

My home made jam this year was all low (as in 1:10) or no sugar. To my mind, some of the best I've ever made. Maybe because the fruit was so sweet this year, maybe because I no longer like sugar. We'll see how well it keeps, though.

Same thing has happened with salt - starting around age 50 I lost my taste for salty things as well.

Thank goodness I still love chillies and most herbs/spices. Otherwise I fear my foodie husband would ban me from the kitchen.

15 beers a day at age of 15
10 beers a day at age of 25
5 beers a day at age of 35

Nowadays if I have more than two beers a day my taste buds capitulate

Yes, same here to having lost sweet tooth. I rarely eat anything sweet. Currently like the new Oh! Greek Style yoghurts in the Migros as they haven't piled tons of sugar in.

Re: I'm getting old.

If you write cookies, I assume that you are referring to an American recipe.

And by extrapolation American tastes. These run to the extreme end of "sweet".

In any American recipe for cookies you can safely cut the sugar by half and it'll still taste (overly) sweet. This is nothing new.

Sugar is the new drug. It has long since been predicted (written in 1981!):

Re: I'm getting old.

This is the reason I don't buy Coke, Red Bull, orange juice, and quite a bit of other overly sweetened things: way too much sweetener (be it sugar or whatever else).

There was a time when I still bought orange juice just because I like the taste - but only if it's mixed it with tap water at a 50/50 rate.

I also cut down the sugar in recipes. Makes no difference to the consistency.

A cake that requires a cup of sugar - gets half that amount, and tastes just as sweet. The only problem is that people eat more of the cake! Very sweet cakes/biscuits means they eat less - (can`t stomach more sugar?)

Ja, I also find the Cokes and other drinks taste far too sweet these days. The only time I drink a coke is when I have a hangover thirst, or am VERY tired.

Perhaps we`re all eating too healthy these days? And don`t require all that extra sugar?

Can you still see the difference between coins? Mine have turned into a blur. The till girl wanted coins again so I just have to hold out a bunch. I was going to buy some new glasses but they had run out.

Agree completely. I haven't had a Coke or the like in 25 years. OJ is always diluted. I totally avoid anything with artificial sweeteners - don't like the metallic taste.

Coffee? Black. Iced tea? Lemon only.

Guess I don't have a big sugar imprint, but I DO like a bit of good dark chocolate.

Mint'n'choc ice cream
Oooo that brings back memories...

I grew up (a very long time ago) in a plain vanilla suburb. Quite literally. Apparently plain vanilla was the only ice cream one could buy. At least that's what Mom told us kiddies.

But once a year we went to a little town on the shores of Lake Michigan. As a special treat the first stop on our holiday was an old fashioned ice cream parlor in town, where all sorts of wonderous flavors could be found. What child could resist the siren call of green ice cream?

Mint chocolate chip still 'tastes' of those lazy hazy days of sun, sand and fun on the Michigan shore...
