Beware - Sahar Indian restaurant, Glatt, Zurich

Just for clarity sakes.
Indian restaurants that dont offer alcohol in India also dont serve any meat.
These are 'pure vegeterian' restaurants.
And 55% of Indians eat meat.
And indian consumption of liquor is quite high.
So unless the restaurant does not serve meat or alcohol and positions itself as vegeterian (vegan is not a known concept in india. Just as ayurvedic is a niche concept in india), it is just being a bit pretentious.
I have tried indian food at many restaurants in CH and they straddle the entire range from being great to rubbish. And yes, most of them are quite expensive. But then if I was to have french food in india, i doubt i would get it cheap (quality notwithstanding) so I take it on the chin and keep looking....

Just for clarity's sake, most restaurants which people call or know as Indian restaurants are actually Pakistani or more commonly Bangladeshi so are probably owned and run by people who do not drink alcohol.

Only the Muslims though of course.

The Murree brewery makes pretty good beer and still survives in Pakistan.

There is Efes in Turkey as well..

Many muslims drink beer (ever been to Bahrain or UAE watching all the Saudis go nuts?), wine, spirits (Raki!) - only the fundis don't drink.

However the decent ones operate a BYOB policy.

We met few friends at this place last Saturday for lunch buffet. The food was good and service attentive and courteous. FWIW.

It's not a problem. You as a customer, can choose whether to frequent them.

It doesn't make the owners terrorists or whatever else you seem to be implying with your offensive remarks.
Lol, you seemed to imply that, not roegner.

Suffer their sufferings - a way of saying they should be a bit more permissive, after all it's a restaurant. Many customers would prefer a glass of something with their food.
Calm down.

Alright folks, I kindly ask you to tone it done a bit. People posted their experience with the restaurant and that is all well and grand but let's not turn this into yet another religious banter. Thank you for your understanding.

Though I must say that whatever OP's intention was, the restaurant gained a lot of sympathy.

There's no such a thing as bad publicity.

Re: Beware - Sahar Indian restaurant, Glatt, Zurich

A few weeks ago I ate at an Indian restaurant in Ebikon, iirc.

It'd been a long day and i was looking forward some baingan bharta and a cold beer.

Turns out they don't serve alcohol, but BYOB was ok. So I asked the waiter where I could buy a beer - but he had no idea. I asked if there was a kiosk nearby, but it was closed. So that was kind of a bummer - i don't eat out very often, and like to drink a beer or glass of wine or two when I do.

And to top it off, they don't serve baingan bharta, either.

Epic fail, never going back.

I have never found an Indian restaurant in Zürich that combines good indian food and friendly service.

Most don't, but there are one or two that so. Kobal, for example.

Seems a bit harsh - their only failure was not having one specific dish, for the rest it seems they were ok with BYOB, he was friendly enough (you don't say otherwise), he probably doesn't know where they sell beer if he doesn't drink it (and with Migros not selling it, that cuts out almost 50% of the supermarkets), and you can hardly blame him for the Kiosk being closed.

For some it's about licensing costs more than anything else. I know one restaurant in Southall, where the same family owns the off-licence next door. Presumably it's lower cost to do it that way.

FTFY. I recall with fondness the surly rudeness of the waiters at the Indian restaurant where I had my stag night. Though they were deliberately acting up for our entertainment (arranged by the best man).
