cake in Zurich

Hello! I'm a new member located in the US looking for advice.

My son is studying at ETH and he has an important birthday (30) in one week. I want to arrange to have a cake delivered to his lab.

There are a number of internet listings I find however 1) I see some don't accept credit card payment and 2) most are for very fancy cakes 200CHF or more) which I don't need.

If anyone has firsthand knowledge or suggestions please let me know!

Re: cake in Zurich

For decorated cakes you have to expect a hefty sum anyway and if you add on the delivery charges it just drives (sorry for the pun) the price up.

Are you in contact with any of your son's friends? Does he live in shared accommodation and you could get someone to arrange the cake pick-up / delivery for you?

They might even know of a good nearby cake shop.

Re: cake in Zurich

You should be able to find his thesis advisor on the ETH website:

https://www.ethz.ch/en.html

Send the thesis advisor and ask him if he can suggest the email of a study colleague who could organise a cake. You could send the money via paypal.

If you post what department your son is in there may be an EFer in the same dept, or building who could take it on for you.

Re: cake in Zurich

Bäckerei Stocker or Bäckerei Wüest are the closest to ETH City.
The later would have a convenient online-order, CC payable delivery option, which unfortunately does NOT work for Zurich. Bummer.

For ETH-Höngg
Beck Keller would be ideally located http://www.beckkeller.ch/torten_s01.htm

Unfortunately, you would have to call and hope someone speaks English and they accept CC.

Simpler is perhaps Bachmann, all online, English, and payable by CC:
http://www.confiserie.ch/en/torten
Delivery to ETH-City would be CHF 32. Delivery to ETH-Höngg CHF 68 !!
(Sorry this is Switzerland)

Maybe get in touch and ask a lab companion of your son.

Re: cake in Zurich

My son lives alone and I know of no close friend (or academic advisor) I would impose on to do this. Really I try to do this via some commercial/internet method.

There actually are listings (Google Zurich cake delivery) but I'm hoping for some guidance via this nice 'englishforum" I happened across.

I have just been looking at the Bachmann's webpage and that does look like a good choice. I've just sent them an email to see if they confrim they can do delivery (other than via post).

Sorru if I confuse things by replying to 3 nice suggestions in this on reply.

Re: cake in Zurich

It may not be a full on cake - but if you just want to let him know you are thinking of him on his birthday then maybe this is a more cost effective

Re: cake in Zurich

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas...it looks like it's working out this way: I searched Google Maps for Cake shops in the vicnity of ETH-Zurich and found a couple.
I sent an email to one (http://www.michellescupcakes.ch/ ) and got an immediate reply from the owner. This what I wanted: some personal assurance. She'll have 13 mini birthday cupcakes delivered...total price with delivery 74CHF...not bad at all I think.
