A giant cup with a saucer of French cafetiere coffee and milk. Cup and saucer, Habitat circa..1995.

The cafetiere is not glass but double-walled stainless steel (I broke so many glass ones) purchased a few years ago in Portmerion, Wales.

The coffee is LaSemuse Mocha.
I love steel French press. So robust. I had a mini Bodum explode on me each time I pressed a while back, got rid off it but regret now, I bet it was fixable.

La Semuse is the no. 1 coffee, innit. Friends swear by it. I wear their sunglasses, it was a freebe on one of my running races. I better get the coffee, when I am wearing them on my face already

I wasn't thinking. La Semuse is in our espresso machine grinder hopper.

It's too strong for a large cup. I'm drinking cafetiere coffee made with Coop's own-brand bio cafe beans.

Does the bio make a difference in taste?

I shouldn't think so. I just like the taste. Of course there are much better coffee beans but I can get these beans at our local COOP garage.

...As far as my budget goes: under one thousand francs - OK, above that - not OK... I have a real problem with the quantities of coffee that I drink throughout the day and caffeine excess can get me a bit hyper. Perhaps striving for perfection hence buying the next level thinggy in coffee making might be not really indicated in my case...
Based on posts here, it sounds like a budget of 1K can get you a very nice machine depending on your needs. Several members have mentioned favorites that lasted years in the price range of 650-750.

I also drink too much coffee and struggle to cut back. I love the taste and of course am addicted to the caffeine. Being in home office makes it worse.

The beans are great, but the capsules for Nespresso machines don't taste very good. It's like they took all the rejects for the bags and stuck them in capsules.

Is that the Espresso Marimba? I like that one a lot. Not too bitter or strong.

This. I think that's why so many choose Nespresso. It's small and easy to use, and the coffee is...predictable?
Predictably bad?

Honestly, I'v e tried loads of different nesspresso and generic capsules, but never found one I like. We've got relatively recent machines in two of our apartments, both came with 100fr of free capsules, so we tried a massive selection under controlled conditions. None came close, IMO.

Having gone through several of these things including the Aeroccino-3, I would recommend *only* considering an induction jug model like the Severin I posted. The entire metal jug heats up when placed in the receptacle making for quicker hot milk or foam and none of those pesky burnt spots. Its also nice and easy to pop the jug in the dishwasher.

Do you grind them yourself? I might switch.

Capsules vs french press/coffee drip is for me the same question of drinking from a real cup or a disposable plastic one. Or eating from a plastic plate or a glass one. I actually think that hot water ran through plastic must affect the taste.

I think I am plastic intolerant. It kills my appetite. I even made a cotton (waxed with bee wax) wrap for sanwiches to avoid putting lunches into sweaty plastic bag or alu foil or even disposable paper. I am not so granola, just that there is too much cheap disposable plastic/stuff around us. *end of rant

You were guys sayin'..

Re: Coffee Machine recommendation ?

After trying various coffees I have come back to Caruso from Migros. The 4/4 strength Espresso coffee was delicious but I wanted a little more kick. The 5/5 strength Ristretto was good but a little too high in bitterness and acidity (though already low by the standards of that strength). So, I simply bought both packs and mixed all the beans together and voila... my perfect (so far), and absolutely delicious, cup of coffee.

Caruso Espresso: https://produkte.migros.ch/caruso-espresso-bohnen-500g
Caruso Ristretto: https://produkte.migros.ch/caruso-ristretto-bohnen-500g

I am not saying there is not better coffee out there, I am neither expert nor connoisseur, but I have yet to find anything that gives me such overall feelings of satisfaction.

Caruso is, in my opinion too, the best coffee from Migros. A very good coffee compared to many other brands...

Re: Coffee Machine recommendation ?

We still have a Nespresso machine when we are in a hurry and our main machine is not warmed up etc. and what I like about it is that so many vendors now make nespresso compatible capsules so the possibilities are endless

My favorite roast/beans from Italy are also made in Nespresso capsule form which has been great to have too

Nice to hear from someone else who knows it too! The beans are on the oily side as opposed to dry, but the aroma that comes from them when you take a big sniff is, to my nose at least, divine.

I read an article here comparing dry vs oily and how oily is a sign of fresh roasting, but also sometimes a negative as it can be used to cover up poor quality beans, but I really can't see any downsides with Caruso given what I think is an awesome aroma and taste https://making-nice-coffee.com/oily-coffee-beans/

I guess in the end I really like it it and that's all that matters.

Me too, I thought Caruso is underrated...

I meant to reply earlier, apart from that I also liked coffee from Tchibo - Barista Espresso and caffe crema were quite satisfactory and price wise very competitive.

Re: Coffee Machine recommendation ?

At home, 2 stailess steel Bialettis. 1 for a person, 1 for 2 persons. Used to buy roasted grains and mill them at home on the other side of the Atlantic. Not bothered to do the same here. Espresso powder from several brands is good enough including Coop and Migros, except Nestlé products.

In the office we have a De'Longhi thing that mills the grains and makes coffee at the push of a button. However, people voted for a La Semeuse Mocca grains that makes watery coffee. Contains caffeine but not recommended at all.

I use that at home. If it's producing watery coffee then the automatic machine grind setting may not be fine enough.

Despite them being local and feeling that we should really support local businesses we have tried La Semeuse beans multiple times and really don’t like them.

La Semeuse Mocca seems to be the choice of many busy offices in CH and it's OK if you prefer long coffee/Americano.

Well, I now have my coffee machine but not the model I originally ordered. When I received the Siemens EQ.6 Plus S800 I was disappointed to find it has way more plastic than the S700 it supposedly replaced, so emailed Digitec to say so. They VERY kindly then offered to swap me to the Siemens EQ.6 Plus S700 for free (it should cost 150chf more and they even paid return shipping!) so the end result is that I now have a new, shiny and awesome S700 with all the stainless steel build quality goodness. I guess they must randomly every so often select someone for a "PR and goodwill" exercise, so I was very happy with how it worked out and will reward them via justified glowing reviews on Toppreise etc.

Anyway, I unpacked it and put my favourite and imo delicious Caruso Espresso beans in it and for the last few days have been in coffee heaven. https://produkte.migros.ch/caruso-espresso-bohnen-500g

The machine can be summed up as:

-------------------------------------

PRO'S

-Build quality seems very good (as Siemens products usually are).
-Grinds quietly (relative to others I have heard).
-Is VERY customisable and you can quickly and easily tailor all possible drinks to your needs. You can customise cup size and amounts, coffee strength, temperature etc.
-Has good milk foam.
-Can make strong coffee even without the double shot function... when I tried the double shot I was buzzing my nadgers off.
-Milk system is pretty clever and consists of a "rubber straw" that can be placed directly in any milk carton (or whatever other vessel you choose) for maximum convenience.
-Has an excellent regular cleaning system that gives me confidence that the machine is hygenic and ready to use.

COULD BE IMPROVED

-Milk drinks could be hotter, but the milk starts cold and fresh so it is to be expected.
-Machine goes through water maybe quicker than others and needs the drip tray emptying more frequently due to the very good cleaning system.

-------------------------------------

So, in summary it is a pricey but much appreciated purchase that I am sure (with the 5 year warranty I purchased) will give me years of coffee satisfaction. I'm looking forward to doing some game/dinner nights and putting it through the guest test.

Photo of a Latte Macchiato:
Coffee machine:

Just thought I would say that after just over 2 years that I still LOVE my Siemens EQ.6 Plus S700 coffee machine and it has been one of my best friends during all of this time at home office. My morning coffee is now something I genuinely always look forward to as part of my daily wake-up routine! The machine has also proved to be a real hit with guests who are always impressed when I can pump out a decent latte or cappuccino with almost no effort. I think it has enough drinks types and strength settings to a good enough quality to satisfy all but the more fastidious and demanding of coffee connoisseurs.

It is not only very reliable and relatively easy to maintain, though there is an associated ongoing cost for water filters and cleaning tablets, but spare parts are also easily available (mostly through German stores). This is good as I cracked the water container lid by dropping a heavy pan on it, doh.

I doubt I will ever be without a fully automatic bean to cup coffee machine in my home ever again.

Coffee:

I was exclusively using Caruso Ristretto coffee beans, but have been 'devastated' to see that since 2 months that Migros have removed the specific coffee bean from their selection and that (for the moment at least) there is no strength 5 coffee bean at Migros. Sad times. Until then I am using the strength 4 expresso version https://produkte.migros.ch/caruso-espresso-bohnen-500g or also the new range of Bio Max Havelar which seems to be the same strength and taste https://produkte.migros.ch/bio-max-h...spresso-bohnen

I hope they will soon release a strength 5 version of the Bio Max Havelar to replace the old one.

Re: Coffee Machine recommendation ?

Nearly 4 years on from my obscene La Marzocco acquisition, machine has effectively paid itself off via capsule savings in that time however. Best of all, it continues to deliver divine results with ruthless efficiency

Interestingly enough I see the retail price of the machine has actually increased by 30% over these 4 years too

FYI, a lot of good espresso bean subscriptions out there too - I briefly even experimented with Blue Bottle (Yes, they ship to CH). But I settled on an Italian roast I buy regularly online now
