Rooster / Maris Piper potatoes - where to buy them in Zurich?

Has anyone got an idea of where Rooster or Maris potatoes can be bought in Zurich?

Looking to make some home chips...

You can look forever. Read the label on Swiss potatoes, what you need are "Mehlige Kartoffeln" - floury potatoes.

The Swiss are not ones to go into potato varieties, they have salad spuds, raclette spuds or mashing/roasting spuds and occasionally some purple variety and thats about it. Trying to find one to make a decent jacket potato out of is simply impossible.

...try the ones Lidl sells as "Baked Potatoes". 5Kg sack, give decent results. Despite the name (or possibly despite the tense used) they are raw!

Otherwise anything sold as Mehlige as long as the spuds themselves are big enough (the Swiss don't like overly large potatoes).

Re: Rooster / Maris Piper potatoes - where to buy them in Zurich?

Short answer is no. Never seen either variety here. What you can do is experiment with potatoes that come in red labelled bags as these are supposed to be for making French fries, rissoles and rosti. Green label is salad type potatoes and blue is for gratin, gnocchi, puréed and baked.

Agree with TobiasM though, finding a decent thick skinned jacket potato for baking is pretty impossible here.

Not sure what type these are, but I have found them to be quite good. From Migros

The institute where the Maris piper potato was developed, in Maris Lane, Cambridge, U.K. is now dull modern housing and a Waitrose.

I just thought you ought to know that.

The Lidl ones in the big bags are Jelly variety which are good for roasting and chips.

Quote:
Jelly is a smooth skinned, long oval variety with rich yellow flesh. With medium Dry Matter, Jelly makes attractive golden roast potatoes or chips......... similar to Maris Piper for chip shop production.

Not sure about chips as have never used them for that but they do make fantastic roast potatoes.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Aiming to do 3 x cooked chips, hopefully the potatoes for baking will work.
