So? Where Do You Keep Yours?

No, not your smutty magazines or play toys. Your ketchup, mustard, tomatoes, etc. Seems half the UK thinks ketchup should (quite rightly imho) be kept in the cupboard, the other half in the fridge.

Actually our day to day ketchups and mustard sit on a revolving server on the dining table ready to be used whenever. The Dijon mustard which I only use occasionally stays in the cupboard. Veg/fruit goes in the veg drawers in the fridge unless they're full in which case they stay out in the kitchen.

Can't say I'm surprised people put stuff in the fridge even if it's not strictly necessary - most manufacturers tell them to refrigerate these items once they've been opened.

Vegetables depend on what it is and how soon I want to eat them

Cupboard..... OH was home for a few days and I've just noticed that he's moved the bottles of ketchup and jars of mustards into the 'fridge. Grrrr.
He'll be back for good in a few months time and I see trouble ahead.

Mustard, Ketchup, Mayo, Maple Syrup and salad in the fridge. Everything else in a cupboard/drawer.

Condiments in the fridge because we don't have a lot of cupboard space in the kitchen, the cat would have the mayo if it was in a cupboard (he hasn't learned to open the fridge yet)....and because I can't reach the top shelves of the cupboards.

Ha, same problem for me Blueangel. Shelves in this kitchen are fixed so not able to adjust them. So either need a step ladder to reach the breakable items or things like crisp packs get thrown onto the top shelf.

Unwashed eggs ( which they generally are here) are absolutely fine at room temperature. I've never stored eggs in the fridge.

Condiments with the exception of ketchup stored in the cupboard open or not, veg in the cellar and salad items except tomatoes in the fridge. Fruit in the fruit bowl.

I guess it depends on how quickly you go through it, if it hangs around for months then maybe fridge is best, even for ketchup. I new someone who kept their marmite in the fridge because a jar would last them half a year and apparently it goes a bit funny after a few months..... Only time I saw our marmite go a bit funny is when we had a half gallon tin....... it lasted longer than the usual couple of weeks.

Ketchup in the fridge, but I keep the things I don't use very often in the fridge, it extends their shelf life. Also we lived in a roof flat for 7 years and it got so hot in the summer that we couldn't even store wine for more then a couple of weeks, we had no cellar (before anyone says anything, I drank it, I did not store red wine in the fridge, no, nope!).

In the UK, I kept almost every condiment in cupboards.

Refrigerated jams cool toast down too quickly so there is a constant battle in our house of me sneaking the jams back into the cupboard from the fridge.

Ketchup in the cupboard. Well, most of the condiments, actually.

I keep the eggs in the fridge because there is a groovy little egg compartment which suits my gadgety brain...

Veg in the veg compartment (unless it's root veg which stays at room temperature).

Anyone who puts fruit in the fridge in our house is in big trouble. Nothing worse than a chilled apple to set your teeth on edge.

All citrus fruit, apple, pears, bananas,tomatoes in wire baskets on a rack
Spuds/onions/garlic in a wicker basket in cupboard/shelf
Quickly perishable fruits such as berries, plums,some vegetables and leafy salads in fridge or styrofoam box on balcony in winter,box in cellar in summer

Ketchup, soy sauce, Ketjap manis, Nuoc Mam,Worcestersauce in cupboard
Mayo, Mustard,eggs etc fridge


I am really peculiar, about the eggs being chilled, seen to many Salmonella infections when working in nursing...

Eggs don't routinely have salmonella any more. How long ago were you nursing?

Where are your eggs from? I'd probably avoid them from a dubious overseas source if you are worried.

It is 20yrs & 7 months that I stopped working in my profession.... in the meantime two of my daughters trained as chefs and third is training currently as baker-confectioner and they still teach in the hygiene guidelines to be careful with eggs.

My eggs come from the Supermarket usually.

You are right Tom, the treat to catch Salmonella us not as big as it once was nowadays, but it is still there and a possibilty, albeit not such a common one now. Better safe than sorry, maybe a remainder from when I ran my own small party catering, I've no oroblem to admit that I can be quite oeculiar when it comes to foodie stuffs. But I might have done it ok.... none of my clients, guests or the ECB members I cooked for ever suffered any food poisoning 😜😜

Ketchup always in the cupboard but mayo, mustard and definitely eggs in the fridge. Have honestly never considered whether there is real logic behind this, it's just always felt like the natural way to store them. Probably just copied what my parents used to do without thinking about it....

You have more space in your fridge than in your cupboards!? I've contemplated buying UHT milk because we barely have enough room in our fridge for more than 1 liter of fresh milk!
