Your best bet would be to head to your local "Balkan/Turkish/Eastern European" supermarket and ask there. Our one also has Portuguese products. It would appear that the owners are trying to cover the full "foreign food that's not Asian" spectrum. It also has a pretty broad range of cow based products. I'm tempted to pop in and find out if they have it.

I'm waiting for Irn Bru to appear.

I haven't found that kind of a market in Bern.

Re: Fresh cheese in Bern

Doing a bit of googling and google translating it looks like it is a form of curd cheese. Quark (with the appropriate ~5% fat content) would be the closest thing here.

Did you even Google Turkische Supermarkt in Bern? Rami, Alima and Merdan come up. You might want to visit them and see what they have!

Škripavac would be great to find too.

I was in Croatia so I bought almost 1 kg of fresh cheese and now I'm ok for next 2 weeks....
Why don't you just post a picture of the one you brought back? So grumpy can find it when he's there? (Or we in what ever shop we might see it).

You never know, he might fall in love with it and stock it in his cheese shop...

He already sounds very interested.
He will stock it right next to the crumpets

Globus Delicatessa (though be prepared to pay through the nose for any items from there), Loeb used to have behind the main store a small shop with Delicatessen.

It seems to me what you look for could be something along the line of Ricotta, perhaps a small Italian shop, with a fresh food counter could help as well.

Is it Turoš or Škripavac you are looking for??
No,no,no.. I know what OP means. Italian cheeses are not similar with any of the Eastern European assortments. I can't even describe the taste, actually (I can only say it's yummy lol). And I am almost sure that most of you wouldn't like them (or at least wouldn't find them spectacular) because you are not used with this type of cheese. (OK, I might be wrong though)

Re: Fresh cheese in Bern

It is called svejzi which means swiss. The croatians may have no idea about swiss cheese then :-) It might be quark. Or even better, Bibeliskäs https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/BibbeliskäsBibeliskäs has the "brösmeli - crumbly" consistence you are probably used to. It is good! Ricotta could be a substitute.

It is hard to come by, but you can make it at home. It has to be made of non-pasteurized milk, or so I remember. That is maybe the reason why you don't find it in supermarkets. It used to be made by farmers to feed young chickens - called "bibeli" in alemannic dialects. You'd have to find a farmer who sells you fresh milk.

I think some clients of mine used to make that themselves.
I'll keep eyes and ears open and let you know if I'm successful.

Still not knowing what cheese you are actually looking for .... not even being a Lidl-client but came accross this and thought of you

Who knows? Might be a lucky strike?

Zuzzi, as you have guests from Croatia, who will surely bring you that cheese - make a photo and post it here for us before you eat it up and throw the wrapping away

Re: Fresh cheese in Bern

Hey zuzi, I asked a Serbian friend from Kosova (that should cover the genuineness of my source ) about buying "svježi kravlje sir" here.

She told me they get it from the Turkish shops where it's called "Sari" (65% fat, she mentioned too).

Maybe you want to check that out?
