Re: Fresh cheese in Bern

There is a lot of "Frischkäse" about, Aldi, Lidl, Migros, Coop, but your home town cheese may taste slightly different to these, due to the different ingredients.

Re: Fresh cheese in Bern

The best Frischkäse I have found here is actually the Migro Budget one and it's half the price of Philly.

The Loeb Food Hall in Schauplaztgasse has a *huge* cheese counter with cheeses from all over the place.

Are you new here?

It simply doesn't work like that - the OP is required to ask a fumb duck question providing at most only 35% of the facts or information. This hinders the forum illuminati from dispensing their wisdom - and instead resort to abusing the fumb duck.

It's a dance as old as time itself.

Actually did you ever try a Turkish shop? They got all kinds of cheese we don't have here.

Globus Delicatessa (though be prepared to pay through the nose for any items from there), Loeb used to have behind the main store a small shop with Delicatessen.

It seems to me what you look for could be something along the line of Ricotta, perhaps a small Italian shop, with a fresh food counter could help as well.

Is it Turoš or Škripavac you are looking for??

For the latter maybe Buffalo Mozzarella could be a subsitute, as it tastes a bit wholesomer than cows milk Mozzi?

Or maybe look here, they might help you further in your query

Perhaps you are looking for Ziger which is available at Käserei Daniel Zbinden on market days.

Škripavac would be great to find too.

I was in Croatia so I bought almost 1 kg of fresh cheese and now I'm ok for next 2 weeks....

I'd still be interested to know what you mean by Fresh Cheese if you say it isn't cream or cottage cheese? Maybe there are other alternatives here...

And what is actually called where you "normally" get it? And in which country?

So it's cottage cheese but tastes better. How? Sweeter, more sour, more creamy, stronger? Can you get it in Slovenia? I'll be there in the summer and really am interested in knowing how it is "better".

Your best bet would be to head to your local "Balkan/Turkish/Eastern European" supermarket and ask there. Our one also has Portuguese products. It would appear that the owners are trying to cover the full "foreign food that's not Asian" spectrum. It also has a pretty broad range of cow based products. I'm tempted to pop in and find out if they have it.

I'm waiting for Irn Bru to appear.
