Sourdough bread?

Is it possible to find sourdough bread here? If not, what would be the closest thing?
Thanks.

Re: Sourdough bread?

Bake your own or drive to Germany. If you look through the post photos of what you bake thread you will see there are quite a few of us doing it. I have not found any in the shops, not that I have looked that hard

Re: Sourdough bread?

Yes I did a search first - and only found information about baking it, in which I'm not interested. As I live in Ticino, Germany is a bit far! Thanks for your response though.

Re: Sourdough bread?

I have seen it sold on the market here so it is possible to find it. It's called pain au levain.

In Lugano...

Along with hearty wholemeal bread , rye bread, nut bread and sour dough bread you will also find a large selection of brioches, croissants, large and small savoury and sweet rolls and other types of Swiss bread .

Just searched it on Google because I know it's easy to get hold of from John Baker in Zurich, and I've seen it in Bern.

I thought pain au levain was made with a poolish; flour, yeast and water allowed to ferment, rather than a true sourdough. I may be wrong, I often am

Re: Sourdough bread?

It seems, Müller Reformhaus has two branches in Ticino:

http://reformhaus.ch/content/filiale...index_ger.html

Where in Ticino are you, actually?

I get my sourdough bread from them. Though, of course, they don't directly bake it in their branches.
They have one to three bakers that they get their various breads from.

I'd give them a call.

Re: Sourdough bread?

Easy to find "Sauerteigbrot" in and around Luzern. In Ticino, search for "Lievito Madre". Give these guys a look: PaneLento

Well, if you're in Zürich then I adore the sourdough-bread from Globus Bellevue this time of year.
They sell it just outside the store, but I believe also inside.

Re: Sourdough bread?

John Baker in Zurich has sourdough breads and the best pastrami sandwiches in town. Every time we're in the area (Seefeldstrasse, but they have other places too) we buy lots of stuff from them. I like everything there, including the packaging. Worth promoting this bakery whenever the occasion arises.

+1 for John Baker! Well worth checking out. One at Stadelhofen for those in Zurich.

Re: Sourdough bread?

as someone mentioned already - in any bakery ask for 'Sauerteig brot'. I am a sourdough bread addict and was often disappointed how hard/firm these bread here often are If in Zurich , my favourite sauerteig brot of all times is sold in Bäckerei Hausammann - it is a giant loaf of bread and they sell it by weight - absolute heaven - soft , airy and excellent taste !

Re: Sourdough bread?

I used to get it in Lausanne at the market every weekend. There was a guy there that only used natural yeast in all of his breads and the sourdough was divine.

Re: Sourdough bread?

I live in Zurich and I second John the Baker for "Zourteight brot". It is delicious and last 3 days or so depending on when you buy it. I have never tried Globus' version but will give it a shot. Great thread
