Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

Anyone know where to find great Mexican food, or ingredients to make it? Share your finds!

Even the Burrito Brothers left me wistful of experiencing again, real, authentic Mexican food. Honestly, it's the only thing I miss about the US.

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

I see you're in Vaud. There's a small Colombian shop in Lausanne that stocks lots of Mexican sauces (mole, pasilla, salsa verde / rojo) and pretty good corn tortillas. I don't remember the name but I'll try and find out.

My cupboard is always stocked with Mexican goods but I usually just bring back tons from Mexico when I visit!

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

These guys do mail order, but probably not perishables.

www.elmaiz.ch

They are in Zurich, and have tortillas, fresh chilies, salsas and some cheeses, dried chilies, etc. very nice people.

I understand there’s also a store in Basel - don’t know the name.
In Bern, Loeb used to stock some Mexican goods.

You really do have to learn to do it yourself, I think. You might even be able to grow your own chilies. A good resource for that is www.pepperseeds.eu

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

There is a relatively new Mexican shop in Seefeld (canton Zurich) called La Guadalupana (www.laguadalupana.ch). They also have an online store and will deliver throughout Switzerland for an additional fee.

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

Thanks for your replies! Hopefully this can be helpful for other new arrivals in the future. I know this is helping me.

I like to make my own salsa, etc, but finding serrano and ghost peppers, especially, has been extremely difficult.

Definitely going to check out that market, Enohzee, merci!

El Maiz frequently has Serrano chilies, and larger Coop have jalapeņos.

Try El Maiz in Joseffstrasse Zurich. Its quite solid. From time to time they also have fresh peppers (stuff you can't find in coop)

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

FWIW, a lot of Coop stores also stock a decent but small supply of peppers - habanero, jalapenos etc. I regularly make fresh salsa and heavily rely on these peppers which go great with Coop's Bio Tortilla chips

However, Mi Adelita (Swiss company) make, for me, the best tortillas (flour or corn) & tortilla chips (blue corn) you're likely to come across

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

Best place I've found for food is El Sol in Allschwil outside Basel. Primarily a wholesaler to restaurants and retail stores, but they have online shop delivering throughout Switzerland and are open during the week and select Saturdays for walk-in sales. (Enter in back by loading doors)
https://www.elsol.ch/en/shop
They have variety of salsas, really great tortilla chips, spices, frozen tamales and corn/flour tortillas, canned goods, chipotles, beers, etc.
Also have lunch truck sublet in front during the week, but haven't yet tried it.
For selection Tequila, things like piņata, decorations - El Mais in Zurich by the HBH.

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

Maria Dolores Mexican products sold at Globus are excellent and 100% authentic. (Not Tex-Mex) They are a little on the pricey side, but totally worth it! (Any of the imported Mexican ingredients are pricey too)

Delicious corn tortillas, variety of salsas, jalepenos, refried beans and tortilla chips.

We met her in Globus once - really lovely person. And yes, her salsas are excellent.

Yes she really is she even changed an ingredient for me because I told her I was allergic...I never would have asked or expected her to do that!

Re: Best Mexicana Resources in Switzerland

El Maiz and La Guadalupana are first stops for sure. We usually try and stock up on non-perishables there. Honestly though, I haven't had great luck with finding chiles consistently (sometimes they have them, often they don't, and I've yet to find a Coop or Migros that carries anything beyond a jalepeno or serrano on occasion.) Weirdly enough, New Asian Market near Badenerstrasse often has interesting south american chilis. But when in doubt, I end up at Jemoli or Globus. You pay, but at least they consistently have various chilis.
