vegan food - where can i buy pbbof?

where can i buy vegan cheese? before cheese-lovers (of which i am one) get irked, let me rephrase that - i am looking for a place to buy pbbof, plant-based blocks of fat, like cashew cheese which someone elsewhere told me about

not surprisingly i didn't find anything in regular supermarkets and stores - coop, migros, jelmoli, globus, also not in müller reformhaus. vegan cheese is available online, but i want to find a shop

i started to reduce meat/fish/dairy after reading this recent paper about the carbon footprint of one's diet -
http://science.sciencemag.org/conten...2/987.full.pdf
"... Moving from current diets to a diet that excludes animal products has transformative potential [meaning global effects] ..."

i switched to oat milk for tea (oatly, available in alnatura). i have to say that i don't enjoy it like a great cup of tea with milk because it lacks creaminess, but oat milk is the best of the plant milks in tea imo. and no way can i give up cheese completely, but i am interested if can find a pbbof that is good at least for some meals...

Have you tried in Alnatura shops? They belong to Migros but have a lot of stuff you don't find somewhere else.

Thanks but there is nothing in Alnatura Zürich anyway. A bit surprising given the Alnatura range of products.

Re: vegan food - where can i buy pbbof?

It's very easy to make cashew 'cheese'

Soak a cup of (raw, unroasted) cashews in water for a few hours, or overnight. Longer=creamier.

Drain and rinse. Add 2tsp lemon juice, 1/4 cup water, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Garlic if you like, too

Put it through the food processor for a few minutes,.et voila.

On a related note, I made this vegan 'cheesecake' yesterday and it turned out great in all aspects- taste, texture, presentation, etc. All the non vegans loved it too. I used 1/2 jar of sour cherries on top, from the local Turkish shop. Sorry ,no pics.

https://avirtualvegan.com/vegan-new-york-cheesecake/

TBH, im not sure the carbon footprint is any smaller than making/eating a normal cheesecake out of dairy products in this instance. Cashews, coconut milk, lemon, maple syrup, etc all packaged and shipped from afar. At least there were no cows subject to slavery, though I doubt the laborers in Ivory Coast, etc. are well taken care after ..

Oh well, it tastes good.

i actually was hoping to find something that i could melt on top of omelette - do you think that cashew 'cheese' would work for that? (intuition says no, but...)

coincidentally enough, i bought some coop bio cashew drink yesterday. i said in earlier email that oat milk is the best vegan liquid that i found for tea, but i tried the cashew drink this morning and it tastes pretty great in tea - it gives the creaminess that you get from dairy, whereas oatly oat milk lacks that. no crazy ingredient list either - cashews, rice, salt

New Roots seem to be the best Swiss producer of Vegan Cheese, they have a few stockists in Zürich which you can on this page.

I don't think it would melt, it's more like a spread. There are some recipes for meltable vegan cheeses on the web but I've never tried them. Hth

Pretty sure I've seen new roots in coop. Coop also has a vegan parmigiano-type cheese.

Re: vegan food - where can i buy pbbof?

Coop (the big ones and Karma Stores) has v Simply cheese, slices as well as grated and cream cheese, also a vegan mozzarella and parmesan as well as new roots cheeses.
Migros has Wilhelmsburger slices and grated, and Alnatura cream cheese.

Hello vegan in Uster has a wide variety of cheeses (can also order online)
Fabulous you can order online but pick up in Bremgarten.
Some Reformhouses like Egli have vegan cheeses too. there are plenty of options. Otherwise check out soyonada (factory in Schlieren), what they have, they for sure have feta like cheese and cream cheese.

Not only that but all these hipster replacement foods are quite processed. Not sure if it is worth the cash or the illusion that it may be environmentally/ethically sounder.

Yes, if the particulars Migros has it, it will be next to the regular mozzarella, and carries the AHA logo. I tried it and it is quite fine. Olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a pinch of salt, and it was great. It has the consistency of mozzarella, without the stringiness.

I used to go to a vegan cafe in Affleck's Palace, Manchester, back in 1982 and had a vegan housemate in '83. There's nothing new about being vegan, just that back in those days, you had to understand nutrition and be a half-decent cook.

Well, considering my vegan years were a decade later than your Manc non hipster experience, I still got to understand nutrition and learned to be more than half-decent cook. I do rember the hipster crowd getting on the undercover vegan's nerves - "can I have a vegan burger/hotdog/cheese/pigears/eggs/beefstew/bacon/honey/don't-forget-the-docs". Vegan docs sucked, they were so expensive, too. Tore right away.

I am all for low carbon footprint, but overpackaged overprocessed overpriced holy foods it ain't. Eating out where real local people ethically cook for you from cratch from local suppliers while you give them decent earnings to support their own vegan or ethical granola lives, make more sense. They gotta know how to cook, though. Rant over.
