Züri gschnätzlets in central Zurich

Hello,

I'll be visiting Zurich in the coming week and I'm looking for a very authentic place to eat Züri gschnätzlets. Does anyone have any recommendations, please?

Here you are!
https://www.zeughauskeller.ch/en/home

It's considered the classic place for this dish.

Re: Züri gschnätzlets in central Zurich

If you want it more fancy go to the Zunfthaus Waag https://www.zunfthaus-zur-waag.ch/ or Zimmerleute https://zunfthaus-zimmerleuten.ch/

More authentic setting of a traditional Swiss Beiz offers the Restaurant Bahnhof Wiedikon
http://restaurant-bahnhofwiedikon.ch/

And if you want it with kidney, which was once considered as the real authentic deal, go the the Restaurant Boucherie August
https://www.widderhotel.com/essen-tr...cherie-august/

Re: Züri gschnätzlets in central Zurich

Zunfthaus Waag is considered the best place to have it, although I found it really salty when I went. I'm also not convinced about Zeughauskeller. It's great if you want to pop in for a sausage at lunch, but it sounds like you want something a bit special.

A few doors down, though is a great place called Zum Kropf. It's a bit more formal (but not stuffy at all), but the dining hall is beautiful with frescoes on the walls. It's also the place where I've had my favourite Zürcher Geschnetzeltes.

The Johannita Bierkeller at Niederdorfstrasse 70.

Fab Züri gschnätzlets. Not quite as touristy as Zeughauskeller, which I also recommend.

(Actually, best we've had in Zurich was at the Hotel Storchen restaurant. Available with or without kidney)

The Restaurant at Storchen is underrated IMHO anyways.

Re: Züri gschnätzlets in central Zurich

Decades ago I used to enjoy the Zeughauskeller; it was a go-to for showing first time visitors 'traditional' Zürich.

Last year a group of similarly nostalgic friends and I visited for the first time in years; we were all very disappointed - in the food, the service, even the atmosphere.

Schade. Maybe they were just having an off day?

Is it still run by the same owners?

Re: Züri gschnätzlets in central Zurich

So wrap it up:

Kronenhalle www.kronenhalle.ch
It is so posh that they not only have priceless art on the wall but also call it "Kronenhalle Geschnetzeltes".
CHF 58.00

Storchen https://storchen.ch
A very nice setting next to the Limmat.
CHF 54.00 (optional with kidney)

Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten https://zunfthaus-zimmerleuten.ch/
A traditional guild house with affordable outdoor setting.
CHF 46.00 (rump) / CHF 52.00 (fillet) in the Restaurant (optional with kidney),
CHF 38.50 at the street terrace.

Restaurant Helvetia https://hotel-helvetia.ch/gastronomie/
Next to a bar on the ground floor it offers a terrace over the Sihl.
CHF 44.00 (optional with kidney)

Oepfelchammer https://www.oepfelchammer.ch/
One of the oldest wine halls in Zurich, under new management since February 2019
CHF 43.00 w/o kidney / CHF 45.00 with kidney

Zunfthaus zur Waag https://www.zunfthaus-zur-waag.ch/
Another traditional guild house restaurant. The house is from 1315, and the Zürich Geschnetzeltes among the best.
CHF 43.00 (optional with kidney)

Restaurant Boucherie August https://www.au-gust.ch
The restaurant at the Rennweg with lots of other meat options.
CHF 42.00 (optional with kidney)

Zeughauskeller https://www.zeughauskeller.ch/en/home
The touristy place at Paradeplatz. Also try the Haxen and the Hausbier.
CHF 36.50

Restaurant Brasserie Johanniter https://johanniter.com
A Niederdorf classic which became a bit posh (how could a student afford this?).
CHF 34.50

Hiltl https://hiltl.ch/
Do not expect kidney here, the whole deal is a delicious vegan version
CHF 31.50

Rheinfelder Bierhaus a.k.a "de bluetig Duume" http://restaurant-rheinfelderbierhaus.ch/
Another Niederdorf classic, not to be confused with the Rheinfelder Bierhalle were you could get a nice big Cordonblue
CHF 26.50

Restaurant Bahnhof Wiedikon http://restaurant-bahnhofwiedikon.ch/
Another budget option which is a bit quieter then the Niederdorf options.
CHF 26.50

and at last

Restaurant Flüehgasse https://flühgasse.ch/
No menu on website. But a TripAdvisor review says it is even more pricey than the Kronenhalle, can it really be?
Geschnetzeltes CHF 48.50 + Rösti CHF 12.50 = CHF 61.00

More or less the same management https://www.zeughauskeller.ch/en/mission-statement
I was there this February. Lunch on a ordinary Sunday. Packed to the last seat with guests from all over the world. Service was speedy, happy to fulfill some special wishes, and the food absolutely o.k.

Re: Züri gschnätzlets in central Zurich

I've been to Zueghaukeller every time we have visitors here, and virtually every time we are here for the weekend.

It is always very acceptable for the money. In fact, considering it is in a prime position just off one of the most expensive retail streets in the world, and caters mostly for a tourist clientele, I find the prices extremely good value by Swiss standards. And the beer is good.

Don't like the way they shrank the beers, though. A large should be 500ml, not 400. I've necked that by the time the waiter is putting the food order check into the kitchen.

However you can fix all this by summoning YOUR INNER TOURIST. And always going for the Mass (1 litre).

Regards

Ian

PS. Forgot to say - Great work by ASITU on pulling together all the prices as well as mini reviews.
