Buying broccoli from migros ive noticed that there is always now a strong smell I dont know if this is the chemicals they wash it in or if the broccoli is fermenting within the plastic packaging. The smell is already pungent when passing through the section. I brought one thinking I can just wash it, but already my whole flat smells and washing it has no affect..any suggestions or just avoid it altogether?

Grapes - those really smell (chemically) funky, leaving the stench on one's hand as well; kale bunches always smell like mold. In whoever's defense, kale also smelled like mold in crunchy Vancouver where the supply has a super high turnover, so who knows why n.

I haven't noticed the smell on broccoli, but it is right next to the cauliflower and leek. Cooked broccoli smells, and overcooked broccoli smells gross.

I think it is brown when it is already slimy and rotting.

Which explains the smell

Are we talking about the typical smell of cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and kohlrabi? So if you mean rotten egg odour it's because that kind of vegetables contain higher levels of sulphuric compound than other vegetables.
It is a natural smell, it always was there and it probably will stay as long as that kind of vegetables are not genetically modified.
Btw you can eat bacon, it's broccoli already modified by help of friendly animals called pigs. It doesn't leave bad odour in fridge, it smells delicious during cooking and it is much more concentrated, so you can eat just 10% of weight of broccoli. But you will loose some benefits of compounds called glucosinolates.

Try to buy broccoli or any other vegetable and fruit not packaged in plastic. It will be fresher and better for the environment.

I always remove the plastic packaging from vegetables once I get them home. I never keep cold meats in the plastic packaging after they've been opened either.

I hate all things to do with cheese (I know, even Swiss people have told me I've moved to the wrong country ), so when OH buys it he has to put it in one of those Lock n Lock containers so there's no odour when I open the fridge. The smell of cheese makes me want to pass out, it reminds me of old men's feet. Apologies to the member who has a cheese shop
