Where to buy meat in/around Zurich

Hi, we are newbies to Zurich and are looking around for ways to buy meat.

We've seen/heard different stories, one of which is that all meats sold in CH are local; another is that not necessary, things labeled as CH might just be packed in CH.

How do you shop for meat?

I saw previous topics but those were years old, so I am starting a new one here... I very much welcome all your suggestions.

Re: Where to buy meat in/around Zurich

Not all meat is Swiss, most Pork and Cow is, but Chicken for example knows a large import.

A product that contains more than 50% meat is by law demanded to specify the country from where the meat came. So if you buy beef that says "Produced in Switzerland" and does not not mention a country of origin than the meat is Swiss. If it mentions "country of origin - Brasil" you know it is only cut and packed here.
If you buy a sauce or pizza that also contains meat there is no legal demand to specify the country of origin of the meat since it does not exceed the 50%

It might depend from where you came, but I as coming from the Netherlands consider the meat in Supermarkets in general of very good quality. So I buy most of my meat in the Supermarket. And every now and then I go to Gaucho on the Bederstrasse to buy a large chunk of Argentinian meat.

Just go to a supermarket (Denner and Lidl/Aldi are generally the cheapest for CH meat) and read the labels or google your local butchers. As for your theory about CH meat labelled incorrectly, please provide evidence or refrain from spreading rumours.

Re: Where to buy meat in/around Zurich

This may be far away, depending on where you are... but if you are nearer to Kt. Schwyz Keller & Söhne is my favorite Metzgerei.

http://www.keller-gross.ch/

BEST. LANDJÄGER. IN. CH. All of their meat products are of great quality. There is also Metzgerei Niederman in Uhweisen, which has lots of meat specialties I have not seen offered in many other places. Plus they get me my Oxtail and so have won me over, but still Keller has my heart!

If you are looking to shop along the lines of ethics, this is a helpful website about Swiss meat and what it means to purchase it.. as in how the animals were raised and so on..

https://www.swiss-meat.com/en/why-sw...-garantie.html

This website may show you the brands that guarantee 100% Swiss meat products. I personally find the quality of meat here to be superb, even when imported so going to the butcher for me is a treat, it is often to Coop/Migros around 5-6 for some sweet 25-50% off deals!

PS, if you are near Bahnhoffstrasse, try Globus--but be very prepared to walk out having spent more than you thought you would.

Good Luck

Re: Where to buy meat in/around Zurich

Depending on what you’re looking for - the larger grocery stores have big departments and in house butcher stations.

Aldi/Lidl has prepackaged stuff.

Also, stores like Globus, Manor, Jelmoli have meat, some at higher cost.

We order from Farmy.ch on occasion, also a bit expensive, but they have interesting stuff.

Depending on your neighborhood there may also be a local butcher (Metzger).

There is nothing wrong with "pre-packaged" stuff and every supermarket has them including Coop and Migros (which also have butchers counters). Independent butchers are generally ovepriced for no tangible (other than psychological) benefit.

Re: Where to buy meat in/around Zurich

If you get outside of Zürich there are a ton of farm shops selling meat, fruit & veggies etc. Certainly not the cheapest option but the provenance of your goods cannot be faulted. We live nr Hausen am Albis & I can easily think of 10 such options within a 3-5 mile radius.

Another option is the Hofladen attached to a mental health stiftung in Rossau nr Mettmenstetten but plenty of alternatives:

Re: Where to buy meat in/around Zurich

To be fair, once you leave the city, there's tonnes of meat just lying around, waiting to be collected for nothing.

To be fair, it takes a bit more preparation (but who hasn't got a well-drained cellar these days?) and it's a bit of a pain waiting till after dark to go and fetch it, but every rappen counts, eh?

Hey! chill out! I didn’t mean to imply there was anything wrong with prepackaged meat. It’s all in what people like. Independent butchers may have special cuts of meat or be able to customize beyond what you can get in a package.

Personally, I like the guys in the big Coop Dietlikon. And they have been very helpful with certain cuts of meat.

The one thing I really miss here though is bone in breast chicken. Yes, I know you can cut up a whole chicken, but I’m not fond of the legs -personal preference.

Aligro in Schlieren. They sell food in large quantities with huge meat section. Small Coop satellite shops and Denner have big mark-downs on meat just before closing on Saturdays. The small Turkish shops have amazing and cheap selection of produce and meat, focusing mainly on lamb and chicken. But nothing beats Germany or France - there meat is around 50% cheaper, but you have a daily limit per person that you can take back into Switzerland.

Aligro in Schlieren and Carmelo (close to the Letzigrund) both have many options. I agree with Germany and France.

There is also a new one called Frischeparadies also close to Letzigrund, they also have special cuts, but a little bit more expensive than Aligro and Carmelo
