Does alcohol get bad?

I was cleaning up the bar and found a lot of whiskies, liqueurs and other types of alcohol such as grappa, schnapps, Port, Bols, Goan feni etc. Some in sealed bottles, some in half empty bottles etc. Some of them, based on memory seem to be older than twenty years. A casual check of the contents of some of the open bottles indicates nothing wrong. I have even tasted some and they appear alright.

My question is, does alcohol (not wines) get bad, become undrinkable?

Generally speaking, no. If you're still uncertain, I'm sure that some fellow EFer would be glad to test it for you.

Be careful of anything that might have had creme in it. Baileys for example. It may not be bad, but it is going to taste bad.

Thanks, Baileys doesn't last very long in our household. There is a bottle of Amarula but that is in the fridge.

Wines can really taste bad if they are stored in a warm place for a long time.

Amarula can also get a bit dodgy in the fridge. It's a special taste so we don't drink huge quantities of it. We received a large bottle several years back at Christmas and after about 18 months it smelled like it had soured so we tossed it.

Re: Does alcohol get bad?

Alcohol don't get bad, in the way they can not be drunk (not talking about wine or beer). Open bottles can lose there flavor and not be worth drinking.

Just try, if it taste bad, spit.

I have some Orval (Belgium beer) in a cellar and they get better years after years (3~5). I would not keep just any beer in a cellar for so long.

I was at a Belgian beer tasting meet a couple of years back at a certain location in Zurich and when some people asked exactly this, the presenter discussed the topic of beers going bad . He said that if oxygen doesnít get at them they typically donít go bad but that the problem is that the pressure and thus the carbon dioxide leak out of the bottle very slowly and they thus taste flat . He said that a spicy cheese goes well with a strong beer if itís gone flat . He recommended especially Belgian cheeses which are made in the same Trappist monasteries as the beers, sometimes using the same yeasts . Some high end beers are indeed intentionally stored for 15 plus years to achieve this .

Re: Does alcohol get bad?

Next to loss of carbon dioxide (which is the main reason beer is still not sold much in PET bottles) in general though many drinks, especially beer are light sensitive which leads to loss / change of taste.

That is why beer bottles are not made of clear glass.

Brown glass blocks the wavelengths best but as they are not allowed on a ship, so some have to be green

So at least, when you store any drinks, do it in the dark.

Re: Does alcohol get bad?

As a rule anything over 16-18% alcohol should be ok for a very long time, it's why sherry lasts when wine at 11-14% doesn't... but it can also depend what is inside, eg cream like Baileys or eggs like Advocaat so give it the sniff or taste test. hic

News to me. Pretty sure it wasn't the case when I was in the Merchant Navy.

Never heard it when I was in the forces either. Seems unlikely, we certainly had local bottles from wherever that were brown glass.

Re: Does alcohol get bad?

Definitely ok to drink. It may evaporate if the seal or cork has become dry but still highly drinkable. In fact many will say it improves with age. Baileys and the like I'd throw out though.

Thanks. My original question was specifically about non beer/wine alcoholic drinks.

Talking of wines, can it be universally taken that all wines keep getting better if stored properly? Or is it only some wines, while the others may get spoilt?
