Re: Sushi, but kinda weird.........

I have a can of corned beef in my storecupboard, saving it for a rainy day at the moment. I've got a big box of stuff I shipped from Scotland in March that's stuck in Germany, can't collect until they open the border and it's got more corned beef in it .

I tried something that claimed to be sliced corned beef from a supermarket in Germany, it was nothing like it and to say it was minging was an understatement

Re: Sushi, but kinda weird.........

If anyone is ever looking for spam in Zurich, it's also called luncheon meat and Lian Hua in Wiedikon sells it. Not the healthiest food but so tasty

Re: Sushi, but kinda weird.........

We never referred to it as luncheon meat in Scotland, always chopped ham and pork (SPAM was referred to as pink lint ha ha).

I looked up the tinned Camp Pie, wow, talk about mystery meat. Made me think of that Aussie film "Wake in Fright" and Donald Pleasance's hovel with the fridge full of revolting looking kangaroo meat

Spam Musubi seems to be a Hawaiian speciality. I love it, haha. When we still lived in Switzerland, my Japanese wife would make sushi rolls with cervelat or cheese in it for me. Yum!

Re: Sushi, but kinda weird.........

Spam fries anyone? It sounds so bad but is delicious in a "spammy" way. two of us vegetarians ordered french fries at a pub when we went for drinks with colleagues. the fries were delicious, though had an unusual texture and we inhaled them. Then came the real french fries and we realized we had eaten the spam fries someone else had ordered

Wow. Frankly I don't want to try this thing.

I'll stick with kimchi....

We always have a jar of kimchi in the fridge, I think it beats the sauerkraut. lol

Anyone here can recommend a good place with Korean BBQ? In Zurich? Might try it after the restrictions are more clear...

Okinawan cuisine has always been a bit different to the rest of Japan due to it's proximity to Taiwan/ China and of course the long American presence there.

We were supposed to be going there this year but it seems like we'll have to postpone that
I hope you make it someday. I'd like to visit (and Ishigaki) but the spam puts me off, to go all the way to an island only to have canned "meat"

Good job you're not hardline vegans, it would have turned into a diplomatic incident!

Fiery on the swiss scale or fiery on the international scale?

Re: Sushi, but kinda weird.........

Deffo international, I can't eat as much as my OH. He once bought a ready made curry from COOP when he was on his own and said he had to get all the curry spices out of the cupboard as it was so bland.

I love going for a curry in Basel, when the waiters realise you're British they always say "how hot would you like it"

Really?? Never seen one around. We ate through our stock of kimchi and now making the instant one (geot-jeori) out of desperation.

They sell it in Basel, about 5.95 for a tub around the size of a large yoghurt tub and it has a long use by date.

Watch, somebody will come along and tell you to try lettuce with vinegar as a substitute.

Maybe we're just a tad more cosmopolitan in Basel
Seriously, there's some pretty good recipes out there, Jamie Oliver does a good one. I did a simple red cabbage pickle he made on the telly the other week.

Yes, it's been often scarce around ZH too. It's one of those freaking things that everyone suddenly discovered is healthyyyy.....like jogging.

But you can make your own, there are tons of recipes on youtube etc
