Re: Lidl have a "British Week" this week...

Alaskan pollock has been available in the freezers of British supermarkets for years now and it gets used in things like frozen fish fingers and fishcakes. My big treat when I go back to Scotland is haddock and chips overlooking the seafront across the Forth to Edinburgh; also decent Chinese food from a friend's takeaway (I've never had good Chinese food here, it all seems to be a fusion of Chinese/Thai/Japanese/Korean and very bland). Because I'm under half and hour from the East Neuk of Fife fish is fresh caught every day.

Aldi in the Insel Center at Weil am Rhein stock "English style" smoked bacon which is nice, not rashers though, more like medallions.

If you want good cheddar or British cheese generally , just go to the British Cheese Centre. Itís better than pretty much every cheesemonger in the UK

ETA I see youíre in Freibourg. Itís still worth a trip.
Even worse, we are in Payerne now. I have been drooling over the website for ages but can never justify buying online. I keep telling my husband we need to get the dogs a babysitter for the day and head up to ZŁrich to stare at the Chagall stained glass and buy good cheese

Nothing better than English fish n chips.

Attachment 140051
Youíre absolutely right, there is nothing better than proper British fish and chips but that is very far from being that.
Itíll do in the absence of anything better but itís not great.

Re: Lidl have a "British Week" this week...

Forgive the stupid question, I don't often shop at Lidl or Aldi.

How long are the deals valid? I see all the British-Irish deals say "ab 12.8" but there's no end date listed. Does that mean it's valid until the 19th?

I see other deals that are only valid 12.8-15.8 so it's not totally clear to me.

If i rock up to Lidl on Tuesday can I still buy biscuits and beans (assuming they're not sold out)? Does Aldi work the same way with sales?

I think they just keep selling these promos until they run out of stock, you often still see stuff a few weeks later. I go to the big Lidl at Binningen BL which is the biggest one in Switzerland at the moment, but they're currently doing a big one in Kleinbasel which has a small one.
Last time they had a British week I got some very nice pies which I put in the freezer. An American friend of mines in Glasgow always looks out for the American promos coming round

Thanks. In the oven sounds much better to me than oil.
Awww, Tom, I meant for the smell in my flat - and as they're apparently pre-fried it should work in the oven.

I thought that was clear - of course fish&chips should be fried - but it wasn't so I live with your groan.
As if I really cared, hehehe.

Would still rather have the real thing. So which Brit will invite me to their place for it? Should be enough around this forum, no?

They're a bit like Fray Bentos pies, lovely to remember but slightly disappointing when you finally get your hands on one...

It lasts until the stuff is sold out. In my local one, baked beans were already gone last Friday.

Lazy bugger!

Pollock (cheap white fish, related to cod), actually: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Seelachs

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollock

Tom

To be fair pollock is sneakily used in many UK chippies nowadays anyway (along with others) due to the cost of 'real' cod and has been for a while.

Trading standards were complaining about it as far back as 2013:

Re: Lidl have a "British Week" this week...

They used to sell many more items, when they started British Week over a decade ago, you could also get ( amongst other things) Marmite back then, a variety of pies and more.

I rather ask hubby every 2nd year for a voucher for my birthday to purchase a selection of British goods online, it may cost a kings ransom, but is well worth it and I don't care for jewellery or so anway
