Lidl have a "British Week" this week...

Lots of 'British-style' stuff... https://www.lidl.ch/de/c/british-irish-week/c2133/w1

Highlight may (or may well not) include:

I'm waiting for English sausage and bacon.

They seem to have that nearly all the time. It's not bad, but not a patch on proper English ale, which they also have from the to time. Seems quite odd that it's not included this week.

Anyway, we shall stop in later, as we're going down that way to get some new bedding for the next apartement now nearly ready for rental.

Have to go to over to the next canton, mind, as Valais is closed today for some stupid holiday. I guess Vaud must be protestant, also has better shop opening hours in general.

A bag of fish and chips for 6.99chf https://www.lidl.ch/de/p/british-iri...h-chips/p52089

So here comes the questions of a non-Brit:
This stuff (fish as well as chips) is all in one bag?
Then what would I do with it - pick it apart and toss it into oil? Ah, while I'm writing I realize I can probably just put it in oil all together

What kind of fish is this, if they sell it for 6.99 per kilo? (now that question came from the Swiss part within me ).

I just love fish&chips and miss it badly, but why does this bag not appeal to me? Where am I thinking wrong? I'll be more than happy to be convinced otherwise - before the week/offer is over.

I think (from previous times I've had it) that it can all go straight in the oven, pre-fried as it is. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if refrying was not recommended.

The packet is labelled with the fish type, Seelachs something, so Sea Salmon, I assume. Cod it ain't, proper fish and chips it ain't. An acceptable substitute for the lazy? Just about, although having said that the versions I've had in the past we're a different fish, colin or ones of the other cheap white fish, so who knows?

Edit: looking at the item on the website, the picture I get says "Alaska Pollock", in English, whatever that actually is.

Brown sauce.

But you can spice it up with some fish&chips.

My Lidl had everything apart from the marmalade that I went especially for. 😖 I did buy the fudge, shortbread, salt and vinegar sticks and fake Ribena though.

Not really sure about this Assumption holiday thing today. Some shops are open here, but others aren’t.

Lazy bugger!

Pollock (cheap white fish, related to cod), actually: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Seelachs

If they have marmite, an authentic inauthentic hot British curry sauce or (as previously mentioned) proper British ale, wake me up.

From what I can see from here in Aargau, it (at least locally) seems to be protestant open, catholic open.

I really have things the wrong way working in a protestant area and living in a catholic area.

Re: Lidl have a "British Week" this week...

The Stilton was ok but far from great, I’m sure the cheddar will be equally mediocre. For me, American week is only exciting for the maple syrup and British week for the cheese, both only ok at best in quality but hey, at least they make an effort. I was really disappointed by the sad offerings of Aldi for gluten free week this year, being a celiac; to top it off, the one thing I did try made me sick. Lidl put on a better show but most of the products were sold out after the first day in my area.

Our whole canton is catholic. What’s open and what isn’t doesn’t make sense to my simple mind. Hornbach and Bau und Hobby are shut. Seedamm Center is shut. Seems butchers and others are shut. But, Coops are open, Lidl is open.

If you want good cheddar or British cheese generally , just go to the British Cheese Centre. It’s better than pretty much every cheesemonger in the UK

ETA I see you’re in Freibourg. It’s still worth a trip.
