I found frozen pierogi!!!!

DWA store in Adliswil (one zone outside of the city of Zurich). 34 Zürichstrasse.

https://www.facebook.com/Dwabiostore/

They have many different kinds of frozen and fresh pierogi. And kielbasa!

I believe it is Russian/Polish/East European. I heard not one word of German the whole time I was in there.

The prices seem to be all over the board depending on what brand of what you're buying.

Re: I found frozen pierogi!!!!

Dwa is a great store and the prices are reasonable. So many products I'm missing since emigration. And they sell fresh typical Russian cakes on Friday and Saturday.

Thank you for this! I'm half Polish and grew up with a grandmother who often made Pierogi with her sisters. My aunt recently gave me her recipe, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll have to check this place out.

Polish? I think? I was kind of in shock from the bounty of pierogi. Definitely no kind of German and no English.

Re: I found frozen pierogi!!!!

In case anyone's also interested in pelmeni / vareniki I can recommend http://pelmeniandmore.ch for home delivery. Not a store, just a nice couple's home business. Fresh and homemade pelmeni, vareniki, tvorog, plus some other Russian/Eastern European foods and desserts. Very helpful to have on hand for lazy winter evenings.

„Dwa” means „two” in Polish. I hope they didn’t mean to increase the prices twice though.

Eating two pierogis wouldn't make me too happy.

But I guess it's better than none?

Thanks for sharing the tip, will take a shot whenever will be possible.
I saw some pierogi and other Eastern European specialties in Oerlikon (https://g.page/LakomkaZuerich?share)
There is also a burek bakery nearby, if you like this kind of fast-food.

Re: I found frozen pierogi!!!!

Anyone know of a Russian/Baltic bakery or store that does fresh bread? I like all different types, but I've got a soft spot for borodinsky bread. I've seen a pre-packaged version in Germany. But never seen it - or anything like it - fresh in Switz...

I grew up on this, though we call it Moskva where I am from. It's a sourdough rye bread, really dark brown.

The closest I got to it was picking up pre-packed Pumpernickel Bread in Manor, Migros has it too, I think. Otherwise I haven't seen the real Borodinsky deal anywhere.

Pumpernickel Bread
You can also find variations of it in Aldi and (rarely) in Lidl, which are very much the same, as they offer in Germany. I believe, that had previouslz found one with kumin there, which was almost Borodinskiy.

I don't know a local bakery with Borodinskiy bread, but quite decent sourdough rye bread can be found in John Baker (they have 2 venues: in Stadelhofen and somewhere in the vicinity of Langstrasse). It is called Rogensauerbrot and it has some reminiscence of an Eastern European rye bread. But it is still very different from a proper black bread (a.k.a. "Puhas rukkileib" or "Must leib" in Estonia or variations of thereof like Karjalan Leib with raisins, and Borodinskiy with coriander and caraway).

A nice rye bread (from Denmark) can be bought packed from scandi-shop (https://www.scandi-shop.ch/collectio...cts/danskt-rag). Not fresh, though.

Walliser Roggenbrot is a kind of a rye bread available in many places, but it has sunflower seeds and some wheat flour, so it ends up looking and tasting nothing like black bread.

Re: I found frozen pierogi!!!!

I do like Borodinsky and Riga breads. Having tried alternative options from coop and migros, concluded that their options are a bit sticky and sour. Borodinsky and Riga breads have sweetness. The only option close to these breads is rye bread at coop. The one dusted with flour, not the one with what looks like seed shells. But i no longer see it on shelves.

Not sure if it is the same people ... in Baar (very close to the train/bus station) there is also a Russian shop https://pelmen.ch/ in case you happen to live around Zug, is a 5 min drive...

Dunno if it's the same. But as a bit of a Slavophile this shop looks especially terrific because, according to its Facebook page, it seems to sell Russian children's books!

Re: I found frozen pierogi!!!!

Thanks Aujourdhui for this message.
I'm Paolo, and together with my wife, we run Pelmeniandmore.ch
We have several products from Eastern Europe and we produce everything on our own with Swiss products (except Herrings that are clearly not available in Switzerland ).
So, no importation of ready-made products, we don't use chemicals and preservatives.
Happy to answer your questions.
