I think every migros with a fish counter sells sushi grade tuna and salmon.

Yes, you need to find the Sashimi. It's also sometimes in the fresh fish section in the coop... And don't be worried if it's frozen - it all comes in frozen...

Coop has a brand called "froya" sashimi grade salmon (back lion) . I use it quite a lot and personally its one of best out there. Comes in a small sealed pack.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned "Der Frisch-Fisch Mercato", they usually have both sushi grade tuna and salmon. At leat in the one in Dietikon.

This is an awesome information on sushi grade fish and eating raw fish in general (including the risks) https://www.seriouseats.com/2017/05/...od-safety.html | The following 2 users would like to thank Chuff for this useful post:

I tried high-end Sushi in Japan and that was enough for me to know it's not something I want to do on a regular basis. I use it for making sushi, if there was any problem I would have noticed, I think.

Being Japanese, I'd never heard of "sushi/sashimi graded fish" before
Whenever I make chirashizushi (scattered sushi, which is what Japanese usually make at home), I get the (frozen) fish at Nishi (Japanese supermarket) or I go to COOP or Globus, tell them I'm making sushi, and they will then show me the freshest fish safe to eat raw. Never been a problem.
I really miss the good stuff back home though!

Here's a question for you now we know you are the expert! -How often do Japanese people eat sushi - on average?

Here's a question for you now we know you are the expert! -How often do Japanese people eat sushi - on average? | | | | | Not as often as people think we do The kind of sushi that is known globally (rounded sushi rice topped with raw fish) is (mostly) to celebrate something. Also, this type, we generally don't make it at home. We either go to a restaurant or order delivery. In Japan they say it takes a junior sushi chef 10 years to perfect making those round'ish sushi rice bases, so we don't bother trying as it's so readily available in Japan.
The most common and often eaten meal is comprised of rice, miso soup, vegetables and a fish (grilled or sashimi, or a meat dish. Also ramen or udon noodles and so much more! Korean style Japanese BBQ is amazing too btw
The sushi that we do make at home are:
1. Makizushi (sushi rolls which you can also easily get here)
2. Temakizushi (great for a party: prepare a bowl of sushi rice, dry seaweed squares, all kinds of ingredients and everyone makes their own. Google it and you'll see pics)
3. Chirashizushi (Scattered sushi, also usually to celebrate something or when you have guests over. In Nishi or the Korean store on Bahnhofstrasse you can buy a premix)
Every single time I have friends over they want to eat Japanese and they had never seen chirashizushi before. They loved it, and also how it looks, pretty & colorful. I've attached 3 pics if you're interested. Pls note that salmon is not something we usually add in sushi in Japan but when I am here...not much choice so I add it for variety.
So whenever friends want to hold a potluck party.....people would say "oh summergirl can bring sushi!" No one ever thinks how much more expensive my ingredients are than someone who brings a salad | The following 5 users would like to thank summergirl for this useful post:

I'm trying to educate my kids into all the other types of Japanese food.
I was in Japan for a week a few years ago and only had sushi once.
The sushi was good but everything else was amazing.

Japanese food culture is so deep. In 2013 it was added to UNESCO “intangible heritage” list. What I love about Japanese food is that it respects the natural flavor of the ingredient, so spices and sauces are not heavily used. Plus it’s healthy. https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-25223105 | This user would like to thank summergirl for this useful post:
