| | Where can I buy large sacks of rice?
Hi all, I'm a Singaporean who just moved here for work.
I am used to buying 25kg sacks of rice that last for months in my kitchen. So far all I've found are tiny fancy plastic bags of rice that my family finishes in 2 days. The Asian supermarkets I've been to only seem to have these pitiful sachets of rice.
Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase Thai Jasmine rice in bulk in the Zurich region? Something along the size of a military sandbag would be nice.
Thanks in advance. |

Stores such as Aligro ( https://www.aligro.ch/).
Ottos also carry 20 kg rice sacks sometimes ( www.ottos.ch).

Turkish and Indian shops sell 5kg rice bags (basmati, jasmin, etc). I guess they know better than us. Ask them |

I wouldn’t keep sacks of rice sitting around for months here. The pantry flies love such things. And once you get them they are difficult to get rid of.

Aligro is a supermarket that caters restaurants & co.
Also "regular" people like us can shop there. They have a big selection of rice in sacks going from 2 to 100kg.
They are also well stocked in "foreign food" as restaurants of all nationalities shop there. I'm Italian and I buy some stuff only there as they have some brands I only find in Italy and not in the other swiss supermarkets.

That translated into 5kg of rice every 3-4 weeks, I was hungrier than the bugs, they had no time infest the rice | The following 2 users would like to thank Axa for this useful post: | |

For arborio or risotto rice: Aligro
For basmati: pretty much any Indian/Asian store
For random other rice: Aligro or amazon DE (delviered just over the border)
I then transfer them to vacuum sealed bags in 1kg portions and store those in the cellar |

I have a 5 kg bag of jasmine rice from Denner. I had fractioned off 1 kg in a plastic container and sealed off the rest. Obviously some bugs escaped.

Once found, the moths are difficult to eradicate. The last instar larvae is also able to travel long distances before pupating; so an infestation site may be located far from the nearest pupation site. In addition to food sources, this species can reproduce and pupate on clothing and any source of clothing must be inspected to prevent reinfestation. | | | | | Nasty little varmits, you DO NOT want them visiting you.

Wow, just got off work to check the post and there are so many options!
Thanks everyone for the tips and information, I can now binge on rice.
I'll make sure to seal the rice sack tight so bugs don't get in. I just moved here from tropical Singapore, and was surprised to find myself getting bitten by mosquitoes in Switzerland. Totally didn't realise it'd be an issue, thanks for the heads up.

The mossies here are harmless by the way. But don't go into long grass unprepared. Ticks are nasty.
(Around Basel, we get rice from the Vietnamese shop near Weststeinbrucke).

Or buy smaller sacks, more often.
