Apples, tomatoes or eggs in the fridge is a crime.
Avocados, onions, and citrus as well.

Of course this all depends on how quickly you're going to eat it - refrigerating cheese to extend its life is an essential part of our cheese-eating habits
Our local Lidl had a great deal on 1lb chunks of Stilton. Half what coop charge. If it turns up again, I'm buying the lot and freezing it.

This thread reminded me that I had an unopened brick of Greek feta in the cellar fridge. Best by date, December 8, 2020. I just opened it for lunch. It was lovely. Now I can make spanakopita!

I wouldn't trust the one from Coop. But the one from Migros .....

I thought we already have a "shelf-life" thread?

Wine I disagree. Certain types of red wine do actually taste better when cooled. Especially cheaper wines that haven't matured properly. On a hot summer evening in Spain a chilled cheapo wine is actually more refreshing than any beer. This is the stuff from a local vineyard who are selling it out the back door. You bring your own bottles and they fill them sort of thing.
There was an interesting thing I heard on the radio a few months back which suggested most of us are drinking our red wines too warm.
It's normally suggested to drink them at room temperature.

Room temperature now is a lot different to room temperature even only 50 years ago when it was around 14'C.
Now it's much higher.

You're probably spot on with your observation.

Bananas.
Bananas actually store well with tomatoes.

Apparently bananas emanate some or other substance that helps slow down decay in tomatoes.

I learnt to store avocados with bananas, which will help the avocados ripen. Subjectively it seems to work.

OMFG - who would even contemplate bananas in Europe, far less sticking the importunate musaceous thingies in a fridge – adding insult to injury springs to mind

Did you know that almost all the cultivated bananas sold in the world today come from one banana plant - grown in a greenhouse - in Europe.

No, I didn't, Tom.
While I don't really intend to explore your deplorable fact, it might explain why I can't take bananas sold here seriously. Why bother? Put them in the fridge or just throw them away

Not just cheap wines, in Andalucia it's quite normal for youngish chilled red Rioja for be served at lunchtime. Goes very well with fresh grilled sardines...

Tinto de Verano (Summer Red) is popular all over Spain in the summer, especially Madrid as it's so crazy hot there in July and August. Although it's rarely Rioja, lighter young reds from Navarra and Valdepeñas usually kept on ice on the bar.
