I had it accidentally once in Spain and I found it to be very tough ... perhaps it was just not a good cut, but I have heard the same feedback from others. I heard it is very high in iron though...

Horses are very emotional and intelligent animals, I can't imagine raising one and slaughtering it for food. As a carnivore, I cannot pass judgement, but nope not for me.
Pigs too.

Re: Why is horse meat cheap?

Yes, I can explain why eating horse meat is bad. (actually they all are, but..)

For the simple reason because there is no horse cattle farming which means cattle raised for meat production, consumation.

This has been forbidden by law and there are no farms.

What happens is, we still do have horses , for sports, for leisure in some eastern countries often gypsies still use them for transport etc.

Once those horses are ill, very old, died ... they are taken by some companies and this meat is sold at supermarkets at obviously a lower price than beef/porc yet , even if we had horse farming that meat would be very expensive due to the difficulty to reproduce them as they're a very fragile animals despite of being very strong.

Because of their fragile health they do die at a high rate and in the Netherlands there's horse meat trading. This meat later on is re-sold to the big industry that makes frozen lasagna, frozen burgers etc. and is incorporated in the "meat" content of the finished product.

From what I know, this meat is "worse" than beef/pork/chicken, because of those reasos (no farming) the whole procedure of how and where from that meat comes from is of doubtful origin and no one knows the procedures (storage of that meat, stabilisators used etc)

Meat is meat at the end of the day and they were all fluffy little babies once.

Having said that I donít think I would knowingly choose to eat a Koala but I do like rabbit. Iíve eaten horse but would choose that either as I wasnít too keen in it.
Iím not a big meat eater in general though.
Knowingly eating koala is hardly a recommended choice. They might look cute from the distance but are in reality utterly lazy, eucalypt addicts which will scratch and bite should you try to harvest them. Never tried koala myself Ė at best imagine they taste like over processed chewing gum

Yes ... but different.

I follow a lovely couple on YouTube who live off the grid in Sweden. They raise all of their meat and they showed their two pigs being butchered. They were brothers, and he fed them a very good meal and while they were eating, he shocked/killed one of them. The other brother just kept on eating and didn't even flinch when he proceeded to butcher his brother in front of him. It really surprised me - especially since they raise all of their animals with care and love.

Then it wasn't a good animal, a good cut, or cooked properly.

komsomolez, I can explain that as well . Why it is of 'no good' but I dont want to keep on making monologues here, maybe someone else will pop in with a good explanation.

There is no good explanation, just absurd prejudice.

That's what salami used to be made of, also horse (and, sometimes, goose). You can probably still find some, if you search in Italy or southern France.

Still is.

When my daughter was living in Svizzera Interna (i.e. before she emigrated to AUS), she used to ask me to get her donky salami, either from Italy or Ticino (harder to find in Ticino).

Even mortadella di Bologna contains donkey (all the best sausages do, I was told).

When my daughter returned from 4 1/2 years living in a certain uncivilised country (aka the US), first thing she wanted was horse, second bunny!

Horse eating is just...right next to koala eating or cute bunny eating. It should be banned.
Then I definitely do not recommend you try Globus quarter pandas.

Of course horsemeat is cruel. Horses should be where they belong, on a race course, being whipped by dwarves.

Re: Why is horse meat cheap?

On the ranch we raised the animals, looked them in the eye, and thanked them for their lives and our sustenance. They may have been be cute bunnies, affectionate goats, or dumb sheep, but at least we didn't buy them in plastic packages. It's an honest way of approaching meat production. We killed the chickens and rabbits ourselves; the sheep and goats were left to the professionals. Our horses were Arab endurance champions--too stringy.

Re: Why is horse meat cheap?

It seems like the migros horse meat used to come from Canada, but they switched to importing from Spain after an animal cruelty investigation (http://www.animalsangels.org/investi...aughter-plants).

Hopefully, the Spanish horses are treated better.

FairDinkum, you are implying that you have a good explanation in two of your posts. If you really think your explanation holds water, please share it with us.
