| | Fried chicken (mjam!)
OK, so I know I'll get at least a little blow-back, since I have lived here two years, but here we go: fried chicken + Switzerland = what?
In Basel, we have only one place, Popeye's at the Bahnhof. I judge their chicken bland, but OK. Can't get better, in CH, and quite $$$.
In the US, I was a regular consumer of Popeye's, where we had a choice of dark vs. white meat, and spicy vs. mild. The pieces tended to be small, but tasted good.
I gravitated towards Golden Chick, bland but damn good, and big pieces of chicken. Outside of Austin, there was Bush's chicken, likewise bland, but still good.
Church's chicken was a large alternative, but suffered from greasiness due to their failure to cycle their cooking oil. They also offered spicy, which just meant lots of red pepper, not a true spicy recipe.
KFC just plain sucked. It used to be great, but the quality went south a long time ago, and nobody seemed to care. Bye bye.
So: there is no fast food solution in CH for good, fried chicken, and I'm thinking about that, just like I'm thinking about Mexican food. Enthusiasts should shout out, since we need a market to proceed.

There comes a point in life's journey when one learns to let go of the past and embrace the present.
Three words: Güggeli im Chörbli.
No, it's not mama's fried chicken - but it really is finger lickin' good.

I suggest trying to make your own. Find some recipes online that have received really good reviews and try them out until you find one you really like.
I don't think fried chicken is much of a "thing" here like it is in the US. What I see more of is paprika-seasoned chicken that isn't fried and has no breading on it. Although, with that said, the Swiss certainly do seem to love their KFC.
Moving to Switzerland definitely forced me by necessity to cook more of the things that I like myself, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's actually kind of fun trying out new recipes. | The following 7 users would like to thank Pancakes for this useful post: | |

Yardbirds in Zurich does well …it is just OK.
If you think Popeyes is bland, I can kindly inform you that most Swiss can’t handle spice. If you want spicy flavorful chicken, you will have to prepare to cater to the immigrant population. What I can’t get over about Popeye’s is the awful sides they chose to have here - the biscuits etc are so damn good back home. | Quote: | | | | | Thanks, gonna try this. 10 mins away. | | | | | But the kiwi on the chicken? | | | | | It's a pickle!
(The Gurkenverein is a powerful lobby in SZ, we garnish everything with pickles. )
Speaking of Güggeli im Chörbli, has anyone been to the Schifflände in Einsiedeln lately? They were famous for their chicken in a basket, but I think I heard that ownership changed... would be interested to hear recent reviews.

Buy a roasted chicken at the Migros or Coop, take it home and consume it. You usually have a nice choice of doneness. Costs 11-13 francs per bird.

Fried chicken fan? Let's talk! | | | | | Fried chicken....discovered some years ago in Barcelona. At a KFC. I thought it was fantastic, felt sorry we couldn't finish our portions. Huuuge portions.
Before anyone jumps, we did eat at local restaurants too, but this KFC was close to Sagrada Familia and after a couple of hours of waiting to get in, then some more to visit it, this KFC fried chicken was godsend.
I'm not sure I would have liked it that much if it wasn't for Sagrada Familia though..
In Switzerland there was (is?) this Chickeria at some point but you just couldn't compare the quality...so I'm not sure KFC is that bad, maybe it depends on the location or something.

Tom | | | | | You are right, Tom - I was looking at the first photos with pickle prominently displayed and missed the photo down stream where there is, indeed, a kiwi.
Mea culpa.
