Does anyone know where to buy raisins, currants and sultanas in Zurich?

Hi All

Does anyone know where you can buy proper rasins in Zurich? The missus wants to make Christmas puds this weekend, and the British store have totally let her down (they've had their truck impounded by the Zoll).

Cheers

Jim

The obvious places to look would be Migros and Coop (dried fruits section):
Raisins = Rosinen
Sultanas = Sultaninen

I know they sell them, coz I buy them

Re: Does anyone know where to buy rasins in Zurich?

If only it were so simple.

What they call rasins here is not what we call rasins in the UK. In the UK, rasins are very small & dark and drier than sultanas than what passes for a rasin here.

Cheers

Hmmmmm... you've got me stumped there! Maybe if you try one of the more "exclusive" places like Jelmoli or Globus - their selection will probably be less run-of-the-mill than the larger supermarkets. Sorry!

I think you'll find they're called Raisins de Corinthe (in french anyway); nearer to what we'd know as currants.
Most of the bigger food shops should have them.

Thanks Anjela

The wife has just told me that it is in fact currants that she is looking for! Doh!
She has also told me that I would be better off not trying to think independantly in future. I'm inclined to agree.

Cheers

Might be worth trying a Manor Food Dept. They tend to have a bit more of a range and also sell Mince meat.

In that case, they're called Korinthen in German and Globus/Jelmoli etc. should stock them. Good luck!

You can buy currants in Coop too, but sometimes only in small quantities as they are sold as a luxury treat not as a normal baking ingredient.

Re: Does anyone know where to buy currants in Zurich?

Any chance a Mod could change Rasins to Currants in the tags and thread title? Not just to spare my blushes, but a lot of people trying to cook in CH find various ingredients from home quite hard to find.

Suet and various other types of cooking fats are a case in point.

Cheers

You can also get them - currants / Korinthen - in health food shops (e.g. Reformhaus Müller)

I took the liberty of adding a bit more to both title and Tags. People are probably looking for all of them at the moment and there is quite a bit of Info in this Thread. If is doesn't meet with your approval, let me know.

Re: Does anyone know where to buy raisins, currants and sultanas in Zurich?

Coop in Zug (city centre) has had its whole range of baking ingredients out on show for the last couple of days in preparation for Christmas.

I saw the sultanas and raisins but no currants I'm afraid.

I did see candied peel, which is a first (for me, anyway).

Re: Does anyone know where to buy raisins, currants and sultanas in Zurich?

Two good sources of currants (and other dried fruits, nuts, as well as a variety of other yummy stuff) are:

Schwarzenbach, on Munstergasse

http://www.schwarzenbach.ch/

And FruchtPunkt, by the Stadelhofen Bahnhof:

fruchtpunkt Stadelhoferstrasse 22 8001 Zürich
Tel: 044 260 71 71

(Their dried strawberries and raspberries are to die for - if they happen to have them in stock, which seems to be hit or miss...)

Re: Does anyone know where to buy raisins, currants and sultanas in Zurich?

Thanks Longbyte

I reckon that the only difficult dried grape product to find in that list is currants though.

Good news! Managed to pick up a kilo of currants in a nearby Reformhaus.

The wife's pud-making weekend with her buddies is back on.
I've earned so many Brownie-points that my life should be nag-free for at least a week.

Woohooo!

I appreciate that, but you never know what other folk might search under. (Off-Topic - bad Longbyt - I couldn't find sugar anywhere when I first came here. Didn't realise I was subconsciously looking for a blue Tate and Lyle packet!)

Re: Does anyone know where to buy raisins, currants and sultanas in Zurich?

For those coming via Google search, I found it in Barkat @ Wiedikon. Also in Alima at Manesseplatz in Zurich. It should be available in Turkish supermarkets.

3.50 chf for 80 gr. and brand is Ezogelin.
It says on the jar: Korinthen, Küs üzümü, Raisin de Corinthe, Krenten

I recently bought Raisins de Corinthe in Reformhaus here in Basel ... they look exactly like British currants.

Don't bother looking for Johannisbeeren as translated by Google.
