I have found that bars have generally been pretty nice with ice.
A few of my friends do this too, though they have far better German than I. Walk out with cooler and beers, pop into bar along the way to the destination, voila, cooler full of ice. Like others have said, it might not be best to abuse this service.

There also a shop in the Bhf here in Luzern which keeps their beers so cold they almost give you frostbite, they keep cool for a couple of hours on their own.

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

I thought ICE was the name used for Crystal Meths:

Key facts
by Geneviève Roberts
* Crystal meth (methamphetamine) is a class A drug, reclassified from class B in June this year.
* When smoked, snorted or injected it gives a "rush" similar to that produced by crack cocaine and is highly addictive.
* 10 per cent of gay men in London have used crystal meth. In London, half a gram costs £25.
* It causes cardiovascular problems and increased blood pressure. An overdose can cause overheating and convulsions.

BP station next to Wiedikon Bahnhof also sells ice and ... hold your breaths... you can even choose whether you want cubes or crushed

Living round the corner from here, I've got used to this luxury & when I tried to find some in Interlaken the other week for the cooler, every place I asked looked at me like I was a mental.

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

More ice exists! It's 4.95 chf for 2 kgs for cubes and something else (I was too excited to see if it was crushed or in blocks)

The precious comodity can be found at the Esso station in Duebendorf on the Ringstrasse (where the roadworks have been going for the last 800 years).

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

I do hope our local eco-freaks aka "we make our own ice"-crowd finally grows up and realize that industrially produced ice used but a fraction of the energy their shoebox-freezer would need for the same amount of ice. Hate not being able to buy ice in most shops. Especially when I'm cranky like now and want some cool Vodka orange.

Ohhh, the memories of thinking I was going to die while floating in a pool with a rum drink in hand.

I'm long overdue for one!

The cheesier version is drinking a blue slurpee and thinking "this is it, but I'm in a 7-11, get outside!!!".

Dude, some of us can't live with one/two measly cubes in our drinks; especially when there are guests or blender drinks.

You can prepare them in advance and have some stock for *urgency* and you can even put some stuff inside, that's so cool, you should try.

Really? I would never have thought of that.

Put "stuff inside"? Do you mean like flowers, or food coloring in the cubes for cutesy drinks? Yeahhhh right.

The fish section at my local Coop gives me ice for free. I pick up a few cooler box fulls every summer.
Hmmm, mackerel tasting G&Ts, with no bones I hope.
