I found ICE! The recipe lives!

I can't believe it. After living here 23 years, I FOUND A SERVICE STATION THAT SELLS ICE!!!!

Decades after the last known Swiss who had knowledge of the recipe died, ice has been resurrected, no doubt by some dedicated ETH Archeologists who unearthed forgotten scrolls buried in the Roman ruins beneath Zurich...revealing the ancient knowledge!

HERE IT IS: BP Service Engstringen
Zürcherstr. 4
8103 Unterengstringen

You walk up to the ice machine...hesitant, looking left and right, wary of would be assasins who want to keep the magic knowledge for themselves..quickly grab a freezing cold bag...sprinting to the counter...and with trembling hands pay whatever price they ask...jump in your car and speed away, the priceless crystals safe in your hands!

What's so difficult about making hardboiled water? The technology is available in almost every kitchen I've ever seen. Sometimes this country amazes me.

vallers has no particular reputation at present
Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

Ice can also be bought at the BP garage in Wollishofen, and there is a company that will deliver ice but there is a minimum charge of about 50 chfs I think.

About a year or so ago, I asked at my local coop if they sold ice, the response was, "In Switzerland we make our own" said in a particularly disdainful manner, but before I could stop myself I replied, "Where I am from our freezers are bigger than a shoebox at the top of my fridge"

The up side was that the guys at the fish counter in Globus at Bellevue were fantastic. They provided 4 2kg bags and when I asked how much, they said I should just have a good party! How nice was that

What I found strange on my trips to the USA has been that fetishism for ICE in the USA ! I in airplanes and in bars in the USA always was busy in declaring "no ice please ,thanks"

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

How much ice are we talking about here? Enough to put in drinks or enough to fill a cooler box to provide some chilled bottled beverages?

Yes I know properly cold beer and cola is another rarity in this land o' snow.

The fish section at my local Coop gives me ice for free. I pick up a few cooler box fulls every summer.

Not really, no. But I put beers and cokes into the refrigerator, and wine into the cellar. And I do not regard 10 centigrades plus as "p...warm"

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

BP station next to Wiedikon Bahnhof also sells ice and ... hold your breaths... you can even choose whether you want cubes or crushed

It is a 5 kg bag, 10 CHF for cubes and 15 for crushed

Worked wonders for recent parties... no more filling up plastic bags of water days before

Ciao

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

ok... so has anyone found ice in the general Geneva area'?..

we are on good terms with the local pizza restaurant and the patron there is happy enuf to give us a bag time to time but with summer parties and our demand for ice up we don't want to wear out our welcome.

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

They sell it at Marinello in HB. Bloody expensive though.

I have found that bars have generally been pretty nice with ice.

Example 1: A friend of mine was having a BBQ in Wallishofen, and we were making cocktails but ran out of ice. We went up to the Irish Pub, and they gave us a bag for free. Legends. Seriously.

Example 2: I was going out on the lake on a speedboat (as you do on any nice Monday ) and we went into Seerose (again in Wallishofen) as we needed ice to keep our beverages nice and cool on the boat. They gave us a garbage bag full, and then when we asked, "how much?" they simply requested that we come back for a drink after our boat ride.

Anyway, just thought that I would share, and now I am back to watching the bisexual dating show on MTV

Re: I found ICE! The recipe lives!

They also sell ice out in the Boonies. The drinks warehouse place next to the bowling alley in Affoltern am Albis sells ice by the bucket load (or some other measure bigger than a cube).
