As for myself, I can't say that I miss things from home. At least for the time being, the plan is to stay here, so Switzerland is home now.
Otherwise, from the old country I don't miss too much, the cuisine is quite similar to German traditional cooking with a lot of meat, meat, sausages, meat and potatoes. With salt. I, on the other hand don't eat meat and love all kinds veggies and seafood with loads of herbs and spices. Was probably born in a wrong place.
A couple of things I would mention:
Porridge (oatmeal) - have found something similar in Germany, but not quite the same.
A special kind of fish (Clupea harengus membras), it's like a small herring which you eat breaded with egg and flour and pan-fried.
Mushrooms! I would spend all my time in the forest picking chantarelles and ceps and hedgehog mushrooms and saffron milk caps and the huge parasol mushrooms and russula mushrooms and slippery jacks and ..yum.
But otherwise I've been able to find pretty much everything here, so no complaints.

OHH YES I DO!!!
I am Peruvian, and i miss absolutely everything! but specially:
Purple corn to make Chicha and Mazamorra (yes it is very purple corn)
Aji and Rocoto (kind of chilli but more tasty than spicy, very unique)
Lucuma (a very special fruit, ice cream made of it is DELICIOUS)
PIcarones (sort of squash and sweet potato doughnuts deep fried and served in a very rare honey called chancaca)
Turron de dona pepa (some sort of hard biscuit made with honey and stuff)
And those kind of stuff i havent found here
However, the last time i came from peru i brought 15kg of food so i can enjoy these yumminess a little longer...ahhh...
all the rest we normally use such as coriander we can find here. Or i go to Spain and i buy it in the latin shops there...but still...peruvian food is quite unique, i reccommend you all try it hmmmm!!!!

| | Which food do you miss from home the most?
Hi, I'm moving to Zurich in August and I'm trying to find out which "British" food you can't buy in Switzerland, or which foods often used in Britian are hard to find, so that I know what to bring with me!
I've lived in Germany before and the main thing I couldn't find there was Fajita spice! The only other things which spring to mind are things you can get around, such as making your own self-raising flour.
I love baking so it'd be great to know anything which is difficult to get hold of or is so expensive it's worth bringing some over from the UK (vanilla extract, essences in general).
Any hints or tips in general would be greatly appreciated .

For me, the jars of vegemite never last long enough - I tend to get attached to the empty jars and avoid throwing them out for a while too. Occassionally I get hungry for a nice big fiejoa. Or a genuine, sun ripened kiwifruit - one where the pale centre part is really sweet and tender.
Chocolate fish
marshmellow easter eggs with orange yolks. |

As an American:
1. The ridiculous, -off burgers you get from the local bars. (if you know the Vortex in Atlanta, you have the idea. Ruby Tuesday is not a bad replacement, for those who want something more national)
2. Buffalo Wings. (I moved here from Rochester. I had no idea how good I had it. Don't you DARE mention Hooter's...)
3. Popeye's fried chicken. KFC is a lousy, LOUSY substitute.
4. Chick-fil-a.
5. Apple pie a la mode.
Notice how this is all crap food, super-rich in calories? Yeah, me too. I can make decent renditions of all of them, except popeye's (I need to get a new pressure cooker for the the Chick-fil-a) , but there is nothing like just sitting down, and saying "Give me a blue shroom, medium rare, with tots," or "Number two, with onions, no tomatoes."

Yes! Please someone tell me where I can get a good burger. All I can find here in Zurich are frozen patties that are dense and expensive. Would love to know where to find fresh burgers. I've been looking all over Zurich for 5 years......

Can you get the sachets of sugar free jelly (the ones where you add water to powder to make it up)?
When I lived in Germany I could only find sugar laden jelly cubes...
