Food colours -expiry date?

I have some of those tiny bottles of food colours that I had bought at Migros last November. Does anyone know what their expiry date would be?

Re: Food colours -expiry date?

I am guessing that in the Rest Of World, they wouldn't expire until they completely evaporated. Here in Switzerland, they probably expire 1 month after purchase or 4 days after cracking the seal. I've had bottles floating around in cupboards for years and they have never made me sick.

Lol..so true..sometimes when I reach out to that pack of pumpkin seeds in my cupboard, I see it is already a month after expiry..which is usually like 6 months after purchase! Didnt know those dried seeds have an expiry so soon

No..it didnt have any sticker or anything on them I think. They were 4 bottles in a plastic cover, which probably had the expiry. I think they will feature again soon in the Migros baking section - will remember to check this time!

Re: Food colours -expiry date?

Expiry dates are only recommended. I find it useful to use my nose and commen sense to decide if something is off.

Re: Food colours -expiry date?

I'm not sure but I don't think the liquid ones (McCormick brand pictured below) don't have an expiration to worry about... I know we usually used the ones that my mom had until they evaporated, got used up or were lost.

However, if the ones you have are the paste kind (Wilton's, pictured below), I think there may be more need to keep track.

Re: Food colours -expiry date?

Depends on the solvent used ... (probably ethanol)
And how much headpace is left

They will be ok

Re: Food colours -expiry date?

Yep, I'd use 'em if they're still liquid!

Given that WATER in glass bottles has a use-by date here -- water; that's oxygen and hydrogen atoms bashed together; you know, stuff that sits in an artesian well for a million years before being pumped to the surface and bottled; how can that go off? -- I think you can safely assume that the Swiss are sometimes a little over-cautious ...

Slightly off topic, but I've also seen organic water being sold in Australia. By definition, maybe unless it's carbonated, water cannot be organic!

Re: Food colours -expiry date?

I think when I left home at 18 my mom still had food coloring from before I was born!

I really wouldn't worry about it, unless it's the paste type like Peg showed. That brings back memories of my stint working for the kinky-cake maker (sorry no pics) .
