Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

OK, now, in our coop at Gartenstadt (which is a relatively big one), you can buy La Perruche "Cassonade" sugar from Mauritius - it's in a bright orange box with a parrot on it (look for the word "cassonade" because they do another in a similar box and the other is just raw sugar). It is soft and slightly sticky and comparable in texture to what I would call "light soft brown sugar" in the UK. Not the dark stuff, but the light stuff iykwim. Anyway, I use this in all recipes that call for brown sugar (except for Christmas cake where I import the proper dark stuff, or get it at Britshop).

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

Briefly mentioned, but of major concern to yours truly - what about raw cane sugar, the non-sticky kind? I found raw sugar at a Migros next door, but it's pretty tasteless and lacks the heady aroma of good old pure cane sugar. Probably beet based stuff.

Globus and Müller have been mentioned, those I'll check once I have the chance.

So easy!

PS. For "dark brown sugar", increase her recipe to 2 tbsp molasses.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

Cream of tartar is a basis of backing powder. In German it is known under the name of "gereinigte Weinsteinpulver" and I bought it in the Drogerie in Solothurn - no problem, although it is not something that every Swiss person would buy.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

I normally buy muscovado sugar from Reformhaus in Glatt Zentrum Zurich. I use it to make Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

I don't know if they are already posted, but it's a long thread. In Zurich, I've got a couple of places. The larger Orell Füssli book store on Bahnhofstrasse has brown sugar and vanilla extract and Golden Asian Store (a Filipino store) at Quellenstrasse very often has brown sugar. There's also a Mexican store, El Maiz, near the Hauptbahnhof on Josefstrasse that has vanilla extract. Cream of tartar can be found in some drug stores (it's not always in stock). Just ask for "gereinigte Weinsteinpulver" and they'll know what you're looking for. Globus is also useful, but inconsistent. They stock different things at different times.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

I didn't spot it here...but if you want brown sugar in switzerland without obscene prices. This is the soft yummy brown sugar

Try the following. I typically order other stuff as well as the prices beat that of coop, migros, globus and the american market. Remeber though...it might be costly if you only ship this 1 item.. as shipping costs 6-8chf for up to 2kg.

Light Brown Sugar - 2.95CHF

Yes, but have you figured out how to smuggle in gallons of real bleach?

Do you mean the strip the hair from your chest, paint from the walls, color from your cheeks and smell nothing else for a week 'liquid napalm'?

I've been unable to find it anywhere here...

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

Sorry back on topic...

I found brown sugar in Ouchy (in Lausanne) at the markets alongside the lake (just out the front of Chateau d'Ouchy) on Sunday last week in the small 'British Shop' van.

I'm not sure quite how long they will be on though. I think it's a 'summer market' and will be finishing soon.

C'est impossible. The only thing I've been able to smuggle in from the states are Clorox bleach pens. The Transportation Authority confiscated my whole gallon that I was trying to get through in my checked baggage. Those little bleach pens are not going to get the yearly mildew/crud off my deck chairs or deck pavers, however!

I'm going to try paint stripper next, which I HAVE found in the Coop Brico. Although, I'm frightened to try it (paint stripper) on the tighty whities.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

Both Coop and Migros do brown sugar. Just depends how fine you like it.

At the moment, Globus are doing a specialities promotion and you can buy Lyle's Golden Syrup - great for making chewy cookies.
Just made a batch - yummy!!

That looks like a great site. Every time i think i've seen them all someone posts another. I think we should compile a list of all these swiss shops that specialize in foods that are hard to get here.

I love bleach. And I have also had good results with Eau de Javel. It seems like the real deal to me.

As far as the "brown sugar" at Coop and Migros. Not the stuff! Yes, it is a brownish color, but it's not the same. American Brown Sugar is used for making cookies and other goodies. Perhaps it's used elsewhere, but I've only seen it in the US.
