Brand name? Picture? Would love to stop being a mule.
There are aren`t that many sugar sorts in the COOP. If my memory serves me well, third shelf up, mid shelf, end of the sugar sortiment in the usual Bio COOP own brand green packet. Mind you after skimming through some of these posts I doubt if it will meet the exact requirements of some posters. The only ingredient was "unrefined raw sugar" or words to that effect. I use it to make sweet and sour sauce but if I am out I use regular white and no-one notices.

Mmmm! Double good rep points for picture of sugar types
Thanks! But to be fair, it was dodgyken who posted the original picture. Shall we trot on over to his post and rep him for it (before we all die of sucrose- (or actually, fructose-) related diseases)?

Just tried, and I can't rep that post — it's too old. But I'll shower your last post with green globs of slime.

They're saying that the photo you posted is NOT what this thread is about. What you showed is what everyone else already knows about, but doesn't want.

THIS is what we want:

It is.

But Demerara sugar is not brown sugar. Brown sugar contains molasses. It's not difficult to understand - it has been mentioned 36,427 times on this thread already.

I'm off to lie down before I go and shoot someone.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

I'm going to start a metathread:

Précis of the easiest concepts that people just refuse to understand and have to debate for hundreds of pages

Initially it will contain my own brilliant, concise posts summarizing whether you need to pay the Billag fee, and the types and availability of brown sugar in Switzerland. I'm going to ask a mod to delete every dissenting post that appears thereafter.

Please don't forget to add the final answer on whether 120K CHF is enough to live on. It would be great to close the books on that one.

I think you better had (go for a lie down) and after your nap let me know what colour Demerara sugar is.

It's brown. But the fact remains, brown sugar is generally not easily available in Switzerland.

There, sorted.

P.S. Does it say "brown sugar" (in any language) on that pack shot of the Coop Bio Naturaplan sugar? What about on the pack shot (of what we're all looking for) that DantesDame posted? Get it now?

The assumption is you are now trolling and/or a complete numpty - either way you've passed acting a little bit dumb 2 pages ago.

Demerera sugar is BEIGE

BROWN sugars contain molasses - no molasses then its not BROWN sugar.

Demerera by definition is a highly refined sugar having under gone heavy centrifuging.

BROWN sugars are unrefined and have undergone mild centrifuging.

The difference between BROWN sugars and Demerera is flavor based. The former delivers a more concentrated toffee and treacle like flavor which adds depth in cooking. The flavor of Demerera is not that different to white granulated sugar. The ongoing search for readily available BROWN sugar has come from the desire to back with it. If it is unavailable then replacing the BROWN sugar with Demerera and a small touch of molasses will suffice.

Just curious, how many of those asking about brown sugar are really into baking?

Irrelevant. This subject - like the CHF 120K minimum salary and flushing the toilet at night - forms part of the DNA of EF. Without brown sugar posts the forum would instantly disappear up its own search box.

While I wouldn't say that I'm seriously into baking these days, when I do bake it is often one of my 'Heimatweh' recipes. Many of which need real brown sugar to conjure up that much-missed taste of home.

Most of the time I just get on with it, use what substitutes I can find here or bake Swiss recipes.

But on those dark rainy days when memories of happy times back home are what is needed to lift that (both figurative and literal) Ausserschwyzer fog... Toll House cookies need brown sugar.

Dona nobis pacem.

And dona nobis brunneis saccharo - or something like that.
