DaveA tells me that one can find brown sugar next to the section where they have 'Free Beer' in the Coop.

Don't tell anyone I told you this...

I can tell you, you won't find Domino-type brown sugar at COOP either. They just don't sell it here.
Not at Coop anyway..

Re: Can you get brown sugar here?

Forget about the expensive imported brown sugar here.

Just take a cup of plain white sugar and add 2 or 3 tablespoons of Melasse (molasses) which you can find in a jar for CHF2.60 in Migros near the honey and jam.

By the way, this Melasse tastes great with pancakes and yoghurt.

My horse certainly found molasses tasty I used to pay CHF 3 for 2 litres though!

Re: Can you get brown sugar here?

Nor any other brick and mortar here...

This is great! I forgot that these sites even existed. Thank you for the links.

Next time I go to the US, I'll have room in my luggage for other goodies since I won't have to lug back bags of Domino's

Where can I buy brown sugar here?

i can't seem to find brown sugar (dark preferably but light will do!) anywhere! i've tried coop, migro, manor, city coop. the staple of all my favorite autumn recipes and all i keep seeing is raw sugar, but not that sticky, packed, delicious darkness that is brown sugar.

any ideas?

If you are headed toward Nyon for some reason the American Store has it, usually both light and dark.

Re: brown sugar?

Also from Lausanne you can try Aligro (www.aligro.ch) which has a store in Renens. They sell Candico brown sugar.

(For those not in the know, Aligro is a bulk-buying place with three stores in Geneve, Renens/Lausanne and Sion, which is basically a wholesaler but is open to anyone.)

Re: brown sugar?

Hello..

This is my first post, so 'hello everyone ' and thank you for creating such an entertaining and informative place to visit!

I've been here 18 months and go back to England to get Brown Sugar... it's a bit of a long trek but worth it

Seriously though, I found some dark muscovado in a little organic food shop, was over CHF8 for half kg but after doing without for nearly a year it was worth every rappen.

I live in a really small village, and if it's possible to find it there... well, I'm sure you will find it with a bit of scouting, just look off the beaten track - the supermarkets just don't seem to stock it. Wish you luck.

Cathy

A good substitute for brown sugar is to add 3 tbs of molasses (Melasse*) to a cup of raw sugar (Rohzucker*). It works well in soft, chewy gingerbread cookies.

*Migros sells both.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

I use the MIGROS Kandiszucker and just grind it in a blender.

It seems to be fine for making chocolate chip cookies and such.

I have not had luck finding Cream of Tartar and Baking Soda in the "usual" packs. It's too expensive (for me anyway) to buy those little pepper size packs.

I have managed to order them from friend going over to UK or USA where its sold in small cans. I use a lot of Baking Soda for pancakes, etc. And you can easily make homemade Play Dough with Cream of Tartar.

Hi

You can find it in Aligro if you have one close by.

Best wishes

Anyone else seen sucre vergeoise anywhere?

You can get it in France-- both light (blonde) and dark (brune) at Carrefour, Eco/Intermarché, and Leclerc. It's the real stuff, and my Tollhouse cookies turn out amazing!

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

try www.peace-foods.ch or if you are near Baar, you can go to the peace foods bakery and purchase brown sugar there. They sell dark and light. As well, they sell all different types of pantry goods such as real vanilla extract, belgian and swiss chocolate ships, cake flour... the list goes on.

Hope this helps.

you can get baking soda from American Food Avenue in geneva area and they ship all over switzerland. It is 1.70 francs for a smaller box and 2.20 for the large american box
http://www.afoodave.ch/products/A_H_..._Soda-3-5.html

They also have American Domino brown sugar box for 2.95 chf and Splenda Brown sugar also.

Re: Where can I buy brown sugar here?

For those of you living in Lausanne or area there is Comptoir des Ameriques located at Pré-du-Marché 4 (near the Place de la Riponne). Map:

http://maps.google.ch/maps?hl=fr&q=r...ed=0CA0Q8gEwAA

They have Lantic brand brown sugar (this thread question), molasses, chipits, vanilla extract, Jiff peanut butter etc.

Scroll down this page to see the items.

http://www.comptoirdesameriques.ch/377712/7501.html

Since it is a small store, it is best to call first to see if they have things in stock. If you miss a shipment, you might have to wait a while.

They also have some items from Central and South America.

Happy baking. I am of course available for testing

Gingerbread cookies are supposed to have molasses. Don't try this with chocolate chip cookies. I did and had to throw the whole batch out. It was that awful.

I've baked 4,578 batches of chocolate chip cookies (a horrendous habit of mine) and am a faithful fan of just using Rohzucker in place of brown sugar. Use the large crystal kind because the finely ground Rohzucker often turns to stone in the package.

Tip: Don't bake the batter right away. Let it sit in the bowl for an hour for even better cookies.

Brown sugar... is this street parlance for an illegal substance.

You betcha. Why do you think it's not sold in CH, eh?

And sold at ridiculously high prices in 'foreign shops'?
