Tsarina in 8008 Zürich + Russian beer

Paid a visit to that Russian shop named Tsarina (www.tsarina.ch) yesterday. Interesting things, even if a bit expensive. Bought one of the beers they have, a Starij Melnik, and tasted it today. Good and refreshing but not spectacular. Also bought a small bottle of Vodka which is superb. The Crimea Champagne looks good but is a bit expensive.

here the shop

they of course have many items of general foodstuff available, which look quite interesting, and so they will see me again

and on their WEBsite they also have some recipes like this one

It's a weird shop. Something says 'not quite right' about a place that sells such items with those rents. Saying that, there are loads of shops selling weird things in Seefeld which are obviously not running via usual commercial parameters...

Quite near to that place, at Baurstrasse, was the home of a half-Russian colleague of my father (it was in the 50ies/60ies, into the 70ies), and there apparently are quite many Russian expats still in that area. The shop possibly is sponsored by the Russian diplomatic service ?
- there at least are rumours to this effect, or something similar

The "Atmosphäre" is right and the Vodka is not weird but quite right as well, making it a pleasant thing

And after having left the shop I turned left into Paulstrasse towards the lake and got into the opening party of another rather weird shop, "Dr.iPhone" www.dr-iphone.ch with free beer and Bratwurscht ! A really good sausage very well prepared

I walked past that place a load of times and was sure it was the Swiss equivalent of a New York dry cleaners, a Vegas sports betting shop or a London fried chicken joint. Suppose now that a beer and a vodka have been purchased they'll have to order more stock.

They have a variety of shelves with various sorts of beer, vodka and Crimea champagne, so that I hardly forced them to re-order.

Tsarina btw. is the Russian word for Empress. Elena Kopossova speaks Russian and Schwiizertüütsch fluently.

I used to be very good friends with her cousin, Yekaterina Gitschalegova, until the unfortunate incident with a jar of pickled cucumbers and the governor of the Yevreyskaya Oblast which resulted in my expulsion from Russia, and the abrupt end of her engagement with the governor's son.

I may have to avoid this shop, unfortunately.

I simply picked her name out of www.zefix.ch, and as the "Verwaltungsrat" is doing the job in that AG alone, it was obvious !

I understand they have links with a Russian language kindergarten and have regular mornings giving children's stories in Russki. The lady there is friendly. The roses in Novosibirsk are blooming early this year...

Mmm Plov. My wife makes excellent Plov

We'll no doubt be making a visit there although the Russian shop over the border in Lörrach is somewhat cheaper.

Thanks for the tip.

It makes me laugh.
The same with Russian establishments in Cyprus for example retailing fur coats

Didn't know about that one. We usually go to Mix-Markt near Basel (Waldshut). prices are very good. A small Russian shop just opened here in Bern, but it's very small and the prices are double than Mix-Markt, but at least the drive isn't as far

...like everything else over the border.

Edit: BTW, I wonder if they handle an authentic Russian-made Imperial Stout...?

Waldshut is not near Basel but near Zürich

I sent emails to both the shop in Bern and the one in Waldshut, encouraging them to start an outlet in Zürich, where either of them would have a good market
