Where can I find corn syrup?

Good Sunday to all,

I've been trying to prepare homemade caramels

for Valentine's day but I need corn syrup, does anyone know where I can find it here in Switzerland?

Here is the recipe I would like to try:

http://www.happytummyblog.com/2009/0...-sel-caramels/

There is also another recipe without the corn syrup but I really would like to do the real caramels:

Thanks!

Re: Where can I find corn syrup?

I think corn syrup can be found at least in organic shops. It can be used as sugar substitute.

Thanks Mathnut!
I think I will try to do it myself using plain sugar and water. Lets see how it goes!

Finding corn syrup? Couldn't be any simpler. Take any kind of food made in the USA. It contains high fructose corn syrup.

Re: Where can I find corn syrup?

I was browsing the site for "American Food Avenue" which was linked in another thread within the last few days (and I'm sure I've seen suggested before)... they do carry corn syrup there.

HFCS?

Go for the natural sugar rather than something so artificial tasting

Re: Where can I find corn syrup?

You can use Lyle's golden syrup in equal measure or something like honey in lower quantities (because it is sweeter than corn syrup). You can also try your hand at making invert sugar, that way you'll never be without.

Post was made over a year ago. I'm sure she is grateful for the advice anyway.

FWIW the corn syrup this thread's talking about is not HFCS, just plain old normal corn syrup.

They sell unflavored corn syrup in huge bottles at the Korean market (Yumi Hana) off Bahnhofstrasse in ZH.

I don't see why HFCS tastes of anything, apart from sugar. And certainly not artificial. I feel some prejudices are showing here. A natural enzyme is used to convert the corn starch into fructose, which is in lots of fruit - hence the name. Fructose is twice as sweet as saccharose, so you can use half as much for the same sweetness = lower calories. By the way Golden Syrup is high in fructose too. Shouldn't someone mount a campaign against that?

"No kidding" referring to using more natural forms of sugar than corn syrup. I actually use honey in a 1:1 ratio in any desserts calling for corn syrup. I don't find it to be any sweeter.
