I've been yearning for such a restaurant. Thing is, that there are ample people who would want such breakfast...but like everything here, it's so unimaginative and overpriced, that it quickly puts people off.
I'm not sure that the market is there. Imagine something within walking distance of Zurich or Basel SBB....how many people every day would get into town an hour earlier than usual to have a cooked breakfast of some sort rather than just eat on the train or the office? I don't think many would

Believe me - I've tried cutting the business case any number of ways to make it work as I'd love to do something different to "the market" here - something bright, clean, open with lots of egg-yolk yellow and stainless steel tables, with corned beef hash or eggs benedict on the menu - but I don't think it would appeal to anybody other than an enthusiastic minority, and one can't make a business work on ex-pat trade for two hours every weekend, it would need to become a daily destination.

Shame though

That's what I'm saying, it has to be quick, clean and affordable. Hash, eggs and bacon for 5Chf (6.5Chf with coffee or juice).

You can't even get that at McDs for that price. But Chips, if you ever start a place like that near me, let me know cuz I love a big, hearty breakfast!!

Re: Breakfast habits - pls share what you eat

I can't eat fresh fruits, fresh vegetables or juices/smoothies for breakfast because of stomach problems. So, if I want to eat all these , I have to eat something ''real'' first like:
- first is coffee...I can't live without it now...
- 2 boiled eggs, soft cheese, avocado and a slice of bread (not white) and sometimes with some chicken meat
- scrambled eggs with mushrooms, if possible with a bit of cheese on top and a bit of any meat I have in my fridge, I like bacon but yeah...sooo unhealthy but I love this one
- I am not crazy about bircher müsli but I eat it from time to time and I use dried fruits (put in water overnight) and if I eat it in the evening I use fresh fruits
- on weekends my husband makes pancakes or zopf and we eat them with jam or lemon curd or dulce de leche!
- I used to eat a lot of bread with butter and marmelade but my stomach went crazy and I can't eat that much marmelade now (just from time to time)
- some nice fried ''cakes'' that are made from soft cheese ( I make the soft cheese myself as I can't find it in the country of cheese!!...with all these cows around...), eggs, flour and a bit of vanilla and orange juice or zest and I eat them with marmelade
- bread with butter and a slice of chicken meat or tuna or other fish
- 1 boiled potato, 1 boiled egg and soft cheese
- sometimes I just eat what I find in the fridge from the night or days before (but this is rare): lasagna, rösti...

These are my favourite meals but I am also searching for alternatives.

From CHF6 breakfast, you'd have CHF2 contribution to labour bill. For a mid-sized place, you'd need around 8 people to wait tables and cook (assuming it was all cooked fresh without microwaves) at (say) CHF30 per hour = CHF240 per hour.

Assuming each breakfast took half an hour to order, eat and leave, that still means that you'd need to serve 60 breakfasts at any time. 120 meals an hour. Every hour of service. Every day of the week.

Have you ever seen anywhere in Switzerland which has that kind of breakfast crowd?

My dream is to open a restaurant here in the style of an American diner, opening early in the morning serving freshly cooked breakfasts and good hot sandwiches during the day. You know, booths, pots of coffee, fresh OJ, that sort of thing. I even have a concept of how it would look....

The ONLY thing stopping me is the commercial reality reflected in this thread - that breakfast in Switzerland is pretty sad affair. One can't run a business like that if 90% of the customers only want a coffee, a croissant and a fag.

Have to wait until I head to UK or US, I reckon
This is a famous diner on the Strip:

Just tone it down a bit, and do it the Brit. way:

I can´t believe I did this but I ordered some Farley´s baby rusks from the Britshop and had 3 with milk this morning!!!
Taste and texture took me back decades to when I used to eat them as a kid. Quiet 5 minutes drifting back mentally to a different age. Taste and smell can really bring back evocative memories.
Think I´ll have more for tea later

I don't drink the coffee on empty stomach! I said ''first'' because my breakfast must contain coffee but I drink it between the bites and my stomach is mostly fine, sometimes I have stomach pain because of it but I can't find an alternative (green tea just doesn't cut it for me) and then I eat a bit of bread and I am ok.

Maybe you'd heave more clients if it was a vegan diner!

Re: Breakfast habits - pls share what you eat

A page of the menu from Lou Mitchells, a diner I visited last month in Chicago at the start of Route 66. Perfectly preserved piece of Americana.

They give every diner free "donut holes" and a plate with a piece of orange and a prune, as the founder believed they had a duty to keep their clients healthy. And the waitresses all looked like they came from the Far Side cartoons

Perfect.

I would be (or would have been) a regular customer of a place like this. Better yet if it was near a gym, so I'd go to the gym really early and then eat. Used to do that in California, daily martial arts practice from 5:30-7am, then shower, good solid breakfast like the one you described, and then straight to work. If there is one single thing I missed while here, it would be this one.

After the solid breakfast I could still have a coffee and a smoke though, if that helps!

On Sundays, we've started going to the Fork and Bottle near the Brunau train stop on Allmendstrasse. They have American style brunches - breakfast burrito, bacon and eggs, pancakes and eggs benedict. Food is good, people are very friendly, and it is kid friendly.

For normal breakfast, since I've become low carb, i eat mostly scrambled eggs for breakfast with a cappuccino. An occassional treat is a gipfeli, or pancakes. In the summer I make an iced coffee in the blender.

Re: Breakfast habits - pls share what you eat

My breakfast typically consists of a cup of black coffee and whatever crumbs the kids have left on their plates in the rush to get ready for school.

If I've already had a chance to look at the EF, I may follow it up with some broken glass and barbed wire to help in formulating an especially sharp reply...

Re: Breakfast habits - pls share what you eat

Preferably brown bread and cheese with two satsumas and a black coffee. If I don't have bread, I have sugar free cereal instead. I can't tolerate very sweet things early in the morning, so I get my sugar from fruit. Sometimes I have natural yoghurt with berries and if it's not so early, sometimes a yoghurt.
