| | closest Thai/Asian shop to Central [Zurich]?
I'm looking to make myself some Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad) and I need all the ingredients. Don't want to walk past a great Thai shop on the way to far-gone places of Zurich, so does anyone know what the closest Thai or Asian shop to Central/Limmatquai/Niederdorf is? Also, if you have a good recipe (I've found the internet ones) or any tips to make this salad, please do share. |

There´s one right in the Zurich Hauptbahnhof. It´s down the stairs at the Sihlquai exit.

I'd recommend the Chinese supermarket close to Wiedikon Banhof. We go there for our Chinese / Asian groceries (wife Chinese). They have often fresh papaya.

J | | | | | Yup, that place is great, first went in the other week and I was in Chinom Heaven. Also Bharkats cash and carry down the road is a great place for Indian-based stuff.

There's one opposite the Cablecom shop where Josefstr meets Zollstr. The address is Josefstr 13, there's a blue apartment building above it with a big yellow sign pointing to Hotel Montana. Right next to the Platform 18 side of HB.

For true Thai, the one across from Cablecom on Josef is unbeatable.

J | | | | | I must have been blind. I go there every Saturday morning and I dont see them! Me want papaya!!!
economisto, Lien Hwa will have all of what you need for the salad. It is a great little place, and dont be fooled by its size. The amount of variety that they stock in there is unbelievable. Go often enough, the girl at the counter will give you 15% discount off each item!
Alternatively, a more Thai centric Asian supermarket will be the one opposite the Oerlikon HB. Cant help with the receipe as I dont cook Thai - have pretty bad reactions to most Thai food.

They are normally in the "greens" cooling counter on the left I think. Just don't confuse them with the Chinese bitter vegetable which looks a little like a cucumber. Very different taste | This user would like to thank jako for this useful post: | |

Yep.. Though my wife manage to cook it, such that it is less bitter (and apparently it is good for you)
Btw, I think the 15% discount is general on Saturdays rather than for select customers.

Have you noticed that Coop, or at least the larger ones, now sell Green Papaya Salad in their chilled produce section? Not so bad, really.

Toss it all together, add some extra fish sauce, lime, etc. to your taste and it makes a very nice quick meal.
