Nespresso stands for me as the single stereotype of an entire generation of products where the manufacturers made up problems that never existed and manage to sell the solution to consumers with smart marketing. Nespresso is a great busines school case to see how artificially cheap machines can lock in consumers. But it is not the sort of sustainable consumer product we actually need these days.
You need to relax. How about a nice cup of tea?

Boring. I need to know what farm my chopped up apples I pay a bomb for come from. And it needs to stop me from juicing fruits that are past their sell by date. And it should only juice when connected to the internet...

I'm quite grateful that our school staffroom dumped the clanky old coffee machine which always jammed, constantly needed cleaning and only accepted one kind of coffee bean at a time in exchange for a nice, shiny Nespresso machine in which I can use the capsules of my choice, capsules I can store in my classroom incorruptible from one term to the next.

Original problem or not, I rather like the solution.

Re: Espresso machine recommendations

The technical parameters outlined by the Italian Espresso National Institute for making a "certified Italian espresso" are (assuming you have the right blend):
  • Portion of ground coffee 7 ± 0.5 g (0.25 ± 0.02 oz)
  • Exit temperature of water from unit 88 ± 2 °C (190 ± 4 °F)
  • Temperature in cup 67 ± 3 °C (153 ± 5 °F)
  • Entry water pressure 9 ± 1 bar (131 ± 15 psi)
  • Percolation time 25 ± 5 seconds
  • Volume in cup (including crema) 25 ± 2.5 ml (0.85 ± 0.08 US fl oz)

....and milk in your espresso....sorry don't buy expensive machines if you mix at the end.

well, in this you should only talk about beers and not coffee.

So you are basically pushing your employers products and support your arguments with the marketing/advertisement crap we are all used to?

Simple example: The capsule recycling system. It's complete BS so that Nestle can counter the obvious argument that Nespresso generates a whole lot of completely unnecessary waste. And yes, aluminium is a great material to keep coffee fresh and many other brands who use plastic add another wrapper around their capsules. But that's still more ecological than an alu capsule thrown into normal garbage...

Nespresso stands for me as the single stereotype of an entire generation of products where the manufacturers made up problems that never existed and manage to sell the solution to consumers with smart marketing. Nespresso is a great busines school case to see how artificially cheap machines can lock in consumers. But it is not the sort of sustainable consumer product we actually need these days.
you are saying it all with so much authority that you have done all life cycle analysis of aluminium vs plastic capsules yourself!
Well, in this way, you should only promote drinking getting your coffee through French press or Turkish pot. I said what is true and has been agreed by most, its the easiest way to get a good cup of coffee at an affordable price. You dont have to drink a nespresso. you may drink up your beers and let rest of the world enjoy good coffee :-)

Easiest : plenty of competition out there so you can't claim this, you could claim the "Nespresso system" is the easiest way, although Dolco Gusto is not particularly complicated.

Good : All depends on your personnal taste profile,m Nespresso coffee is good, but their are plenty of other ones that are equally as good.

Affordable
: Nobody can claim Nespresso is afordable, the profit margins are indecent, a capsule, all included, George Clooney as well, costs around Chf 10-11cents, they have a 500% profit margin.

Both debatable.

Perhaps you don't really appreciate good coffee?

To be fair is the Nespresso taste really quite good. Not absolute top, but definitely over average. Affordable price? Hell, no.

I've got that one too. I really, really like it.

It's an Australian design re-badged as Swiss Solis.

I reckon Australia has the best espresso outside of Italy so they know what they are doing.

why would you say so? I just checked upon price of ground coffee from Lavazza (good quality one ( - 20 CHF per 250gm, which means 80 CHF per kg. Lavazza is a respected coffee brand in Italy. A Nespresso capsule has 6gm of coffee, and using Lavazza in Nespresso like capsule would already cost you 48 cents without considering the capsule cost and advertising and everything. Typically you get 10 capsules of Nespresso for 5.50 CHF. Including everything, if you get a decent quality coffee, for this price -this should be OK price.

Well, I do. I am not saying Nespresso is the best and only coffee I would go for. But considering the ease, quality, compared with all the other brands like saeco, Douve Egberts, mio star, gagia, caffitaly, cafissimo, etc. it offers far better quality.
I would always like a shot pulled from Electra or Rancio, or La Pavoni . ...but its not so handy and quick and one needs to master the coffee pulling and frothing to get good quality. My just opinion is that Nespresso offers pretty good quality and least of efforts and comparable prices. Thatz it.

Lavazza normally costs CHF 8 /500g, so CHF 16/kg (when not on sale for half, which it often is).

Where do you come up with this CHF 80/kg nonsense?

Tom

Re: Espresso machine recommendations

sorry, my mistake. there were 4 cans for 20 dollars. - didn't realise USA amazon offers it this way. So, it would be 1/4th of the price - still 15 cents or so. But Lavayzza's capsules for Nespresso cost 40 cents against 50 cents of Nespresso's capsules

Re: Espresso machine recommendations

Our old Jura just celebrated its 21st birthday. At the 15 mark, we sent it back to the Jura-spital for a checkup, cleaning, and replacement of various tubes, etc. The espresso aficionado of the family is pleased with its performance. It takes a bit of cleaning (especially if you are cursed with hard water--you need special tablets and a fiddly cleaning cycle), but I like the Zen-like experience of cleaning a lovely machine. Just like fixing a classic car.

I had to go watch the video to find out how it works (guess it was to simple to just see it )
I like this, I will look into it definitely. So far I found it on digitec and Kaffeezentrale.ch, Glaxus with a quick search. Thanks for the input

edit: Do I need to do regular weight lifting in order to get that coffee done?
